Friend is buying a used 636 Ninja

Here's the rundown, I saw it on ebay, it's local to my house (around 50 miles), and a pretty decent price. The ebay auction completed, but the buyer couldn't get insurance, so he is still looking to sell it. Here is all the information. Any advice on previous Ninja riders or just on buying used in General. Also, he said a tow truck driver dropped it in the gravel, and that's where it got the scratches (none on the fairing though?) Sounds a little sketchy, but the guy is being very open and communicating quickly through email. Is it worth the drive? Also, what would I need to complete the sell (I always bought new and have never bought a bike or car from a private party). Just a bill of sale, would it need to be notarized (according to Ga Law). Also, the bike will be bought in Georgia, and tagged in NC, so should I keep it in a pickup truck until we get to NC and apply for the tag? Sorry for so many questions, just want to help my friend out as much as possible!

You need a bill of sell on the Bike, And you have to get the Title notarized. To register the Bike in NC. and Proved you have insurance on a present Vehicle. Get the bill of sale what you are paying on the bike you can't low ball the price on the bill of sale, because you pay tax on currect value on the vehicle. some states like NY you can say You payed $1.00 and pay tax on just the One Dollar. That does not work here.

Ya I always wondered about low balling the price on a bill of sale, good to know!

Leos! - What is required when the bike is first purchased, the bill of sale and insurance? (aside from the obvious of a helmet and MC license).

Yeah i wouldnt put a dollar. I put $100 on a car I already owned just wanted it from my wifes (girlfriend at the time) name to my name. I paid for the car the year before and had it put in her name but anyways a month later I get a bill from the state saying there was no way I paid $100 for a 2 year old car and I now owed tax on it as if the car was worth $12,000 unless I could prove I only paid $100...turns out there was no way to prove that.

Ya.. I'm from Georgia.. and it'll be registered in NC.. so no point in doing it anyway as apparently they charge by the estimated value~

I wouldnt worry about those scratches. They can be buffed out with a polisher/grinder or just replace it. If it had been in a slide, the scratches woud be much longer and cover most of it.

Those look like tip over scratches, no biggie.

Get the insurance set-up prior to buying, then meet him at the DMV and complete the sale there. That way if anything isn't on the up and up, you'll know before he rides off into the sunset. Bill of sale is good, but the title is the most important part.

Check the bike over well. Make sure the front end isn't bent, etc etc. For 5 grand the bike had better be in great shape.

Are you paying cash for the bike or are you financing it? If you are paying cash for it, you dont need insurance on it if you are transporting it in a truck. You do need insurance on the bike before you ride it on a public road or before you get tags for it. I wouldnt worry too much about those scratches. They seem minor. These are fun bikes. I have a 2003 636. The are wheelie monsters. Make sure you get a good steering dampener for it. They are prone to head shake.

Paying cash. Once we do decide to drive it, all we need is proof of insurance and the title/bill of sale.. correct? He wont' be registering it until he gets to NC, so there will be some driving in between.

Also, VINs didn't show up on Carfax.. I was told that a lot of motorcycle wouldn't. He even sent me a pic of the VIN sticker to ensure he had it correct.

my girlfriend rides a 03 636, its been a fantastic bike. when we were in the market for a 636 and doing alot of reasearch about them the biggest complaint we heard was they had notchy/weak tranny's in them. Amy's bike's tranny does seem slightly on the notchy side but nothing to bad.

Personally I'd do the sale at the DMV and have it retitled into your friends name with the seller standing right next to you.  Then later he could retitle it in his state.  I'd rather go through a little extra paperwork just to be sure everything is legit.

I think I actually do. I know I kept it, but I dunno if it made the move or not.....if I have it you would need to rewire a few things as I snipped em for the integrated taillight.

Why do you want to put all that stuff back on?
