Fuel Issue after mods

All right gentleman..... I have an 05 that I put a set of D&D show and go slip on's on and the milage was fine after that, now I just installed frame sliders and a K&N air filter and I went from 50mpg to something around ~25mpg. Exhaust smeels really rich, but not much worse than it did off the showroom floor. Should I install a power commander or get the computer re mapped or something to go with all the free flowing intake and exhaust or is it something else?

Thanks Guy's.

I would get a PC and have it custom mapped..

Husband had the same problem after installing full exhaust, he had it custom mapped and went from 30 mpg to around 42 mpg.

Some of thoses frame sliders can gobble the gas..

Ya know 'Ranger...I've experienced something similar.

You'll probably find that the majority of folks around here will say that a PC won't do ANY good unless you have a full exhaust.

Well, when I installed my bolt-ons and the k&n, I noticed a difference! It's running rich and I've lost a little power on the low-end. Just so I wasn't imagining it, I re-installed the stock cans and realized the 'pep' was back on the low end.

I'm no engine expert, but I don't understand why a PC wouldn't be needed (preferred). Afterall, the stock ECU is tuned for the stock, baffled (read: restrictive) cans. When one installs aftermarket, unbaffled cans - some of the exhaust restriction has been removed. Granted, there is still restriction in the X-pipe, but there HAS to be some restriction removed when getting rid of the stock cans. Heck, I had to get rid of the PAIR valve to stop the 'backfire' with the bolt-ons.

Anyway, I'm gonna hafta save up $$$ to get a PC. If a PC wouldn't do anything...why would DynoJet have maps for various brands of bolt-ons?

Good Luck, keep us posted!

A custom MAP might not be required... getting a PC and installing one of the pre loaded MAPs should do just fine. I installed the pre-loaded MAP when I had the Yosh cans on Elenor... she ran good!!

Do You have a TRE on it?
Not sure what the tre is so I would say probably not. Only mods are a pair of slip ons and a k&n filter. Mileage stock was ~49 and some change, unchanged with the addition of the slipon's but as soon as the k&n went in the milage went to chit.

Take the kn out and put your stock filter in..The reason it probably smells so rich is because of all the oil on the filter..

If you over oil the K&N it becomes restrictive and doesn't breath well at all. If that happens it will be rich and you will loose mpg. seen it a bunch of time with cars.
just my 2 cents.

K&N's aren't really worth the money. I have one in my scoot because a buddy "helped" me with the air box mod to help it breathe mre and the ony thing that doesn't fall thru the hole is a K&N. My mileage dropped too but I attributed it to my heavy right hand! When I'm on the throttle she gets really thirsty! Sustaining 140+ yo can literally watch the gas gauge drop!

My PC is on the way and perhaps I'll get a mile or two more per gallon but If I don't ... who cares!?! The Harley is for putting around and conserving fuel!
