Fuel return 'U bend'

Hi all
Firstly thanks for a great forum, I'm a long time listener, first time caller!
Searched and searched but no joy so hoping for help.
Iv got a gen 1 fuel tank that has a corroded fuel return with small holes. It's the part inside the tank and it's corroded on the u bend.
I'm just wondering if I cut the return to about an inch will it cause any problems. I appreciate it's designed with a bend for return and pressure reasons but iv also seen sender block off plates for gen 2s with the fuel in and out just going to the same place???
If no solution im always open to some education. Iv attached a drawing so you can see what I mean
Regards

I'm thinking that same thing but I can't help but wonder why the u bend is there? I'm assuming pressure regulation of some kind. I'l give it a go and if it starts to run poor I know what's caused it and swap the tank. To be honest I was more curious as to it's purpose but it remains a mystery.
