gas gauge malfunction

I have the same exact problem. It first started around 4000 miles in the middle of a huge trip. Of course I ran out of gas. Now that I know about it I just use the mileage. I need to take it in but the wait at the bike shop is 3 weeks for an appointment.

Like my pa always told me, never run your tank close to being empty as all the crap sits at the bottom of the tank.....

Had a similar problem...

Dealer fixed it with a new sending unit and adjusted it for a proper fit. Works fine now. Warranty covered so nothing out of my pocket and only a few hours of down time.

anyone have a bad gas gauge, mine won't go down into the red, and won't light the light. of course, then it runs out of gas.
i hate taking it in, but...

big papa

Ran mine right down to the last drop Wednesday. Lurching into the gas station, I filled her up with 5.7 gallons. I always run her right down to the end b/c I can I guess. I like to know how far I can really go on a tank.

Best I've ever done is 213 miles.

adowell,
I would assume that our tanks drink from the bottom?

If our tanks had a reserve switch, then, yes, crap would prolly accumulate at the bottom.

But on our tanks, we should be slurping from the bottom. I think.

Have you tried resetting your dials yet??

Tank drains from the bottom. Petcock fitting has a long filter attached to it that sits inside the gas tank.

Would suggest removing this (2 bolts.) cleaning the filter and reinstalling.

Bet ya $50 that the bottom half of your filter is clogged FULL of a clear slime / gunge. If so, you also need to get the filters in the pump and injectors and clean all the bastards.

Viol8r gave good piccys on this couple of days ago.

First off, clean tank filter. Reset gauges, and see if it is okay.
Then do pump and injector filters

Nuts
