Gear welding

so my second gear is shot again and I'm wondering if anybody has ever welded then undercut a gear and how it works??? I just talked to dusty at APE today and he says he'd rather have a gear welded then cut because it tempers it. Just want to know if anyone has done it??

Well if you weld the gear it will make it stay in place, but it will weaken the metal around it. If the person welding knows how to re-temper the steel properly it should work. If not you will more than likely mess something up. You won't just have to worry about the gear, but the shaft will more than likely break. A weld is stronger than the metal around it, but the heat that is involved during welding will weaken the metal around it. The weld won't break but the metal will. Just like when you break your arm. You'll never break it in the same place twice. The bone that grows back during the healing process is stronger than that around it, unless you have some kind of medical issue. So I say nope. Unless you can have it re-tempered.

well i can logic my way through the process as well. I asked if anyone had actually done it. I know how it works on paper.

Like JC said, either way will work. Welded and then undercut is probably a little harder just like with hardweld cams.

You say you lost second twice - did you get the gear undercut last time you replaced it?

Well just tryed to give some advice. Also, if the weld does hold whats going to break? the shaft or the gear? Have fun replacing both instead of one.

When it happened the first time I just replaced the whole tranny, I had a crashed busa so just swapped. Now that it's gone out this time I'm not sure what sort of steps I need to take. I don't know if undercutting is adequate or if I need to do more. The guys at APE said it's better I'd just like to talk to someone that has some miles on welded gears. I'm also looking at cyro treating the whole shaft but that's the next step I'm hoping this is good enough.

Get into the tranny and replace all shift forks and shift fork shafts and the suspect gears at a minimum. Then youcan decide if you want to do the undercut. I think I would rather go the new then undercut route myself.

+1 on what djorgenson said about replacing shift forks - bent forks are what made me lose sixth and second in the first place.

As far as welded vs new I'd just see what the price difference is - the difference in hardness between welded and new won't make near as much difference as having the gear dogs undercut will.

I have a FBG full undercut tranny with a billet output shaft on my nitrous 1397 - @ 10k miles so far no problems (it will probably explode today now that I said that though)

the problem with going with the new gear and not having it undercut is that it is going to wear out again and you will where you are at now. The only time we weld the gears is when one of your gears to too badly worn and needs to be replaced. We weld up the gear dog back to the original size and then undercut it. Hardwelding of the gear is usually cheaper than buying a new gear as well.

P.S. Bob my name is Dustin, not Dusty

I see that now, sorry about that. I mean no disrespect!! I know that my gear is worn a little but I'm not sure how much is too much. I put a note in the box with my driven shaft saying that the gear can be replaced if need, but it sounds like welding is meant for the gears that I have. Not broken just a little rounded off. Same with the 6th gear dogs, not really bad just a touch rounded.

It's no problem. You wouldn't believe what some people think my name is when I answer the phone. In most cases you don't need new gears you just need to have them welded back up to spec and then undercut.

I have heard of cryo freezing the gears which i belive has benefits. From what i was told that was done to mine and no problems what so ever but not cheap
