Gearing Down

I'm thinking of gearing down either to a 16 front or a 43 rear what I would like to know is:

How much will it affect the top speed?

How much will it raise the rpms around 80mph. currently its a bout 4000.

Is there any difference to witch end I do (front or rear)

I know it will affect the speedo but it is already off so I use gps most of the time.

Anybody that has done the mod and can give me some good numbers to my questions would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

Well if you go to a 16T that will be about 13mph of the top. Close on the 43T but you will loose about 15mph

Your RPM's will go up by about 600 with the 16T about 400 on the 43T

It will knock your speed of by about 10% assuming you were off at about 7%

Comes down to bottom or top. If you like both leave the stock gearing

So Ne, if I wanted to change my gearing to a 16-42 (is 42 correct?) I'll suffer some top speed loss?

I wanted to change my gearing for when I hit the track later this year. Will the 16 on the counter make my front come up a whole lot easier? I'm a little worried about that one; this wheelies easily enough as it is.

Pac you will suffer a lot on the top with a 16/42 That is down in the front and up in the back over stock. Just go to 16T front and leave the rear stock @ 40. See hiow you like that. For your area and for raciing the 16 should work nice. How often you goig to go over 180mph. ;D

yeah it wheelie much easier than it does with stock gearing.

I will go with the 16t first and see how that works. I haven't gone over 160 yet not many place to open it up in So. Cal without hitting traffic or the CHP. I know when someone from So. Cal reads this there going to you can go here or here to open up the bike.

yeah, that is true, NE.

I just wanna add more low-end punch to the bike. I hope it won't hurt the top speed too much, though.

We have some 04 R1's coming in...I'll be sure to look for them to play around with. In the meantime, I think I need to do some weight reduction...and I don't mean the bike. I gotta drop some of this 255lbs of un-flexable muscle.

Thanks for the tip, NE.

I have -1 down in the front and I weigh about 165. When I get on it from a stand still the nose slowly comes off the ground, but I am not wheeling unintentionaly because I am getting on it though...

I like it... put some punch in there for ya...

For the track 16/42 is the way to go...Yeah stock length it's gonna want to wheelie easier but wtf is you scared???Most street races ain't going past 150 anyway and most of us don't have miles of open unattended freeway so top end does it matter???Set it up to be a down low a$$ kicker...

Hey Pac Man I'm suprised that you didn't say anything about shaving in this thead you must be tired or maybe ran out of razors J/K

I went down to a 16t up front and love the ummmph... And don't miss not being able to hit 180+ on an irregular basis!

I've also heard that going to a 16T will be a bit noisier, since the aftermarket sprockets don't have the rubber piece that comes with the stock sprocket.

Don't know this personally, but I read it here I think...
