Gen I HID Questions....

Howdy guys, been doing research on this as it is a mod I would like to do once I get my other issues straightened out. Have a few questions on the info I am finding.

Are any of the kits plug and play? Capable of splicing but always prefer not to.

Is there a consensus on where to put the ballast?

What strength highs/lows are people finding a good combo and why? Are there happy mediums? Brighter lights I would think would be good but too much heat? Too blinding to other drivers (only a concern with low beam, I want my high to light up the world) ?

Delay timer....what is the exact reason people want them? I read the posts and I gather there is an issue with the light turning off when you start the bike? Does it stay off? Is the posted DIY delay the best way to go? What are the other options here?

Power draw....does it draw more power? I thought it should draw less than the stock set up....

Most quality kits are plug and play. Find one that has slim ballasts and you can get them into the fairing without too much trouble, although I do have a 2008, so not sure how much different the front fairing is. I got both high and low beam, the price was right.

The delay is a mystery to me, but I gather GEN1 requires it sometimes. I have one that I didn't need if you want it. No charge, just PM me your address and I'll dig it out.

Good luck and be patient above all else. :)

Most mount the ballast on the right side intake tube. You can plug the HID wiring right into the OEM harness and not splice wires. You will have to splice wires if you install a relay or switch.
Switch: install to toggle the HID off and on manually so you dont cycle the bulb and ballast each time you start your bike. You turn on the key(ballast ignites the bulb, you thumb the starter, ballast and light goes out and restarts. Sometimes it comes back on, sometimes not. At least that is what happened to me.
Relay: time delay so when you start the bike, the ballast ignites the bulb after the start up process and does not cycle the HID's. Same function as the switch, but you dont have remember to turn it on.
Good luck, install is easy too bro, just take your time.

Funny thing, I just did this mod today on my `07. Much easier install than I thought. I just took off the dash panels, unplugged the gauges and removed them, which gives you access to the back of the headlight. Install is basically plug and play, no splicing.

I have read that it is not good on the HID's to come on when you turn the key and then start the bike, so some people install a delay to keep the HID's from coming on for like 30 seconds or so. Really, all you have to do is press and hold the start button before you turn the key, hold it in while you turn the key, keep it pressed and pull in the clutch and the bike will start, but the headlights won't come on till you release the start button. So every time you start your bike, you have to hold the start button before you turn the key.

It's easy, just do it, it's worth it!

If I remember correctly, on some of the older (older than 2005 I believe) the starter does NOT disengage the headlight circuit. So the engine cranking may be enough current draw to cause the HID light to go out. If this happens, you have to turn the bike off and then back on again to get the light to stay on. If you don't have an interrupt (switch or delay) then you will keep having the problems. Some users have experienced it while others haven't.

I did the delay relay on my 2003, like stated above, so I didn't have to remember to turn the light on after starting the engine.

Easy install and with the newer slimmer ballast it's even easier. Ballast issues with start up. On Gen I you need the toggle or TDR. Gen II from what I've read you can get around this.

+1 on all above. On your 99 Busa... you should go with the delay timer. Not hard at all. Slim ballast is best but I got a good deal on a kit but the ballst was the old style..kinda fat. But it still installed in my nose without a problem. I love the mod. It's like daylight at night time.

Lumenez.com makes a great HID plug and play system I work for metrorestyling.com and they are half the price. 8000k is the best choice very bright with a hint of blue.

I got a HID kit from Indysuperbikes.com. With the 582T delay, it all fit on top of my right intake tube. With the black ties and double sided tape, you'd never know they are there.

Keep in mind that "plug and play" is a relative term to different folks. I have the XenonKing kit with no issues to this day but...it is not plug and play. There is no OEM style connector to plug the leads into the original light power connector. You must also pad the bulb in order for it to remain firmly fixed in the headlight mount. Other than that..hands down the best mod I've done.

what bulbs? they say H7 and 9005 what are those and whats the difference I am looking at the Lumenez.com web site. I want bright bulbs and I want to do a timer too, other benefit is there is not a voltage drop during starting from the headlights either
