GIpro keyed power install?

All the threads I've seen installing these units, have had the OP powering directly to the battery. I have but one outlet in my garage and it's in a bad spot; meaning I don't always plug in the battery tender. So I'm gonna splice my GIpro into a keyed power supply.
Has anybody else spliced in, instead of taking the easy way out ?

You can switch the power, but you will have to reset your map everytime you start the bike. It needs a constant hot to remember what setting you left it on.

Oh I see. I only bough it for the gear indication, will that still set up correctly?
