Good Ride Today

THE SLOW RIDER
Registered
Well today was my first long ride since getting out of the hospital. I have been very fatigued and didn't know how things would go. was alsiding alone so if there was an issue it could be a big problem in the middle of know where. I rode the loop through Hampton, to Glouchester to West Point and a little more north through the forests and back. It's about 250+ miles and took 6 hours or so. It's very strange but I was dragging getting geared up (almost canceled) but as soon as I was on board and the engine started I was like new. Felt great but did have some fatigue towards the end of the ride. Fortunately I was mostly on cruise control and on the interstates so it was more or less just kick back and enjoy the ride.

I had the SENA voice recording attachment to my GoPro 3 setup but it didn't work (or I couldn't get it to work actually). I want to do some videos showing some of the wisdom of road riding so I need to get this worked out. I must say the SENA stuff is really making me a fan, especially the 20S head gear. This thing really works great and I haven't even used it with another rider! Got 2 phone calls and was able to send one to voice mail and take the other with voice commands. Really cool! The more I use it the more impressed I am with it. SENA also really fixes stuff with the firmware upgrades too.

I actually rode with a 65 year old who was walking with a cane yesterday. He had an accident several years ago at the track and messed his hip up. He labored alot walking but once on his bike that all disappeared. He was riding a BMW K1200RS which was bigger than the busa.

I'm glad you're out riding and that was a good riding day(6hrs) this time of year.

I had low potassium. Sounds simple but after pumping me with a massive dose for a week in the hospital it's still low normal. Effects are extreme fatigue and heart failure if it gets too low. I have to get this resolved because I don't think I would be up to a track day in this condition. Will be trying to get it resolved in Jan with diet, and med adjustments. Dr.s don't know why potassium keeps tanking they tested everything. I'll be eating lots of tomatoes & mangos!

It's funny how one little thing will throw everything off. I hope they get you fixed up. Been there, done that, and it ain't any fun.

arch, good to hear you went for a long ride, and it went really well. I didn't realize it (or you weren't sharing too much) that you were out of commission for a while. Hope you sort things out. Health is the foundation of everything we do.

There is something you could do to help yourself. Think of your body/soul as a very sophisticated and advanced entity, fully capable to re-program itself. It knows what's wrong. You just gotta focus/listen/meditate, and visualize how your body fixes itself. Sounds far fetched - because we, especially in the Western world, distanced ourselves from the most basic things. Our body/soul are a lot more capable than we think. I wouldn't be saying this if I didn't have firsthand experience... I fixed my back problems, maintain my genetic issues with knees, don't get sick, and hasn't taken any medication for 15-20 years.

Good luck on your recovery and try to take it easy til you get the all clear. Glad you were able to get out and enjoy your ride it's been raining alot here weather should break next week.

It's interesting because they gave me a list of foods that are high in potassium in the hospital and those are all my favorite things. I think the low potassium thing may have been going on for quite a long time. Like most people its hard to keep our lives balanced. I have spent the past 30 years working 10-14 hour days, 6-7 days a week. Last year I worked 12 hour days for 63 days straight without a day off. Ultimately that sort of schedule takes a toll. If I had it to do all over again I would do it again, Architecture is a very competitive business and I love the pressure. But it's just that it takes a lot of exercise to keep a 230 lb (my size when I was in shape and lifting) body in shape and I don't have time for any! But the opportunities I have had are rare in this business and even rarer for a minority. So you have to do what you have to do and hope the body can take the stress. It's sort of like a pro football guy playing with concussions - you know you will pay a price for every hit but that's what your life is all about. Occupational hazard I suppose.

Seems it's time for a change, arch - more of taking care of yourself, and less of the business. Maybe it's time to gradually start enjoying the results of all the sacrifices that you have been making. A casual walk in the park, some quiet thinking, putting everything in perspective - maybe that's all you need in order to find a new direction.

I also suspect that you are a workaholic... "Hi, my name is Igor, and I have a problem...", LOL. And if you are, it is a serious psychological problem, which you have to recognize, fear, and deal with in an intelligent way. Gone unchecked, it will suck you in bad, without you even realizing it, and beyond the point of no return.

And that's where bike therapy really shines. Injecting a turbo into this process makes bike therapy three times more effective - that's a fact! :beerchug:
