Government excess & a 48yr old fire still burning

All the stories not there. But basically the towns been ruined. There was a town in ok that got relocated because of sinkholes from a mine.

I'm sure the core of engineers decided it was cheaper to just buy the town out vs putting out a fire that was near impossible and then assesing damgage and then buying out the town. Sometimes the only options are bad ones. Not saying that's the case here but it could be. And I'm sure the mine co has some liability in all this btw welcome to silent hill. lol.

They could have put the fire out when it started for a whole lot less than what they spent to buy the town. Whoever buys the mineral rights will have it out in a couple of years.

Doubt it. 1962 or so, we weren't nearly as far along as we are now. If the mine is older than that its is probably very poorly designed and very unstable. When the gov stepped in aorund apparently 80 something its an abortion. Total loss cancel christmas. I don't know if anyone could even survive t fight that fire and be productive or succesful. Move everyone out and blow it out. Sell rights. Recoupe some lost gov money. No more live lost. You wanna move back now go ahead. Darwin buddy.

Cut and pasted from 2/3 of the way down the article: "The fire began at the town dump and ignited an exposed coal vein. It could have been extinguished for thousands of dollars then, but a series of bureaucratic half-measures and a lack of funding allowed the fire to grow into a voracious monster — feeding on millions of tons of slow-burning anthracite coal in the abandoned network of mines beneath the town."
Trust me, I live in the Illinois coal Basin, there is nothing these energy companies won't do to mine coal. they don't care what it costs or who gets killed or hurt to get it out of the ground. I'm sure the mines are now unsafe but new shafts will be dug and that coal will come to market, and it won't take very long. Too much money to be made.

My bad didn't see how it started. Prob hit the scroll on the bb too many times. I was just saying maybe it was an explosion or something but clearly not the case.

I know it'll come out too but hopefully the gov can get some of the 42milli out of it.

I know about the neglect to by companies. I work in the energy field. But if noone will go down there what do you do? Lol. Bomb it and collapsing the shafts is probably the only way to actively extinguish it now.

We get oil and gas out of places now that were impossible before. That's what this will become. But it can't be on fire. Most of the neglect I would imagine wouldve been state and company. Then feds had to take reigns and run everyone out. If they didn't the company and state wouldve let everyone stay and be in harms way.

But your right, gov couldve appropriated money from get go and put it out. But if they did that all the time we would be buried in debt worse.

Trying not to ramble but its not working.

 It's cool. I know what you're saying about technology, and you are right. Shame about those people's homes though....

I hear ya but the heck with their homes, I'm sure they could have made out like villians... wait a tick, they did, they lived in the homes the govt. bought from them rent/mortgage free for how many years ???

Just sayin, someone should do something to fix this one and I'm SURE someone in the chain of $$$ got really really well paid :banghead:
