GP-style shifting

I spoke to a local dealer about making this change but wanted to know if anyone here as done it, is contemplating it, or has any thoughts on the subject.

He said it's not difficult to change to the 1-up, 5-down shift pattern. He said that they could also make a change so that the yellow highbeam switch (found on '04s and I think '03's, but not on my '02 so they'd have to change out the left stalk) would briefly cut power to the engine so that pulling the clutch in wouldn't be necessary, allowing for quicker shifting.. But that seems like overkill and additional expense.

In some ways I like the idea, in others not so much... might take some time to get used to considering all the years of 1-down 5-up riding.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Anyone done this mod? I didn't get into pricing with the guy because I wasn't overly interested at the time.. but I keep thinking about.

Did it and had it that way for 3 years. Just switched it back to normal. I had all my bikes GP shift when I was road racing. It's really not hard to get used to. I actually prefer it in a lot of instances. I may switch back if I get around to modding my R1 to GP.

Cool. Thanks Hood. Can you tell me.. is it a difficult change to make? What's actually involved in making the change?

I switched mine over a couple of months ago.  I definitely prefer the GP shift pattern.

If you decide to make the change just be careful for a while.  You shouldn't have any problems for the first few rides.  It's after you get comfortable that she'll try to bite you.  Most that I have talked to have made the same mistake at least once after converting to the GP shift pattern: You're totaly comfortable with it after a few weeks, then... you get on it hard, maybe from a traffic light, or worse yet, coming out of a turn.  You top out second gear, then it sounds funny when you bang it into third.  Oops, you went up instead of down.  If you're lucky you just found neutral, but if you hit 1st your back tire locks up until you pull the clutch in.  This can happen to you shifting from2-3, 3-4, etc., but the lower the gear, the worse the back-torque

If you want fast shifting have you thought about going to an air shifter?

I have known about those for years, but never have got one myself, I have never had much of a problem shifting. not trying to brag but I even impress myself sometimes.. of course I am easily impressed though lol.

ehem... anyway..

I was talking to this guy the other day that quarter mile races his Busa, and he has an air shifter on it.. He said he loves it. Basically it is hooked into his horn button.

I guess when he flicks a switch it disables the horn and switches over to the air shifter, then when he races instead of shifting with his foot, all he does is press the horn lever and the air shifter slams it into the next gear.

Then when he is done racing, flicks a switch and the horn button acts as a horn and the air shifter is disabled.

Sounded to me like a pretty sweet setup. Said he never misses a shift, and it is right there, no lowering of RPM's nothin. just WHAM!! next gear, WHAM!! next gear etc

Not sure if this was the kind of input you were looking for, all I could think of to offer..

thanks Thrasherfox.. Sounds like a sweet setup for racing. I'm thinking more for every day running though, but will research air shifters a bit (I never thought of them). Quick shifting is the idea of doing this, for me anyway. I appreciate your input.

Shortly after I got my bike I was talking to my friend, and he talked me into it... It is not hard to get used to it, but you do have to be careful from time to time. It will deffinately give you a wake up call.

There is nothing to it.
1. just loosen the bolt that connects the trans.
2. slip it off and and flip it over.
3. you are going to have to play with it for a time or two because there was a bolt close to it that kept me in first for a time
4. there should be a linkage between the lever and the connector. either tighten it or losen it to level out the sihfter.
5. tighten it all back up and give it a try

You can always put it back if you dont like it... that is the nice part.  JUST DONT FORCE THE THREADS
