GSX-R's

I'm a squid to the superbike scene, only having ridden 250's offroad for a few years and I plan on taking Beginner and Advanced Motorcycle Saftey Classes; I have a PRETTY good feeling that the Busa is WAAAAAAY out of my league so I was wondering if the GSX-R600 would be a good start/transition from dirt to street?  Please be honest, brutal if you feel you must.

The CBR600F4i is a good intro bike. It will still kill you if you dont respect it, any bike will.

The transition should be actually smooth as long as you you dont go sliding the 600 around a turn on the street.Just remember that most car drivers arent looking for a biker, they are looking for other cars or not lookin at all! The signals are on the handlebars for a reason, use them, and drive very defensively.Throttle control and dont try to exceed the bike's or your abilities and you should be fine. NJ.

If you have been riding for years it really should not matter that much what you have been on. All the stopping, starting and jumping you have done on dirt bikes means you have some skill already. The real difference will be in the speed and accelleration you will experience with either the 600 or any other street bike. And they don't stop as well as your dirt bike either. The next big thing to remember about the Busa is that it is tame up to a point and yet it is very responsive. However, it will bite you in the asss if you twist it to hard to fast. Just take your time and get a feel for it.

And welcome aboard.

Well ... I've been riding dirtbikes, more the 125's than the 250's as they belong to my friend and his family (only two 250's and 3 125's both Kawasaki) out in Mojave Desert.  Never any regular trips, sometimes twice a summer and sometimes a year between trips; all in all I've probably totaled 16hrs on a 125 and 5 on a 250.  Never ridden a cruiser or street bike in my life and I was reading the recommendation of a SV650 for a first bike; I was curious to know if the GSX-R600 is MORE powerful or less powerful than the SV650, better handling/worse handling, etc.  Quite a few of my friends who ride regularly have told me I could learn on a GSX-R600 and be fine; this squid tho would like the opinions of those who have ridden for a while as to a really decent first bike.  Not a prob with the manners, you're being honest.

P.S. If any of you live in the Covina, Glendora, Azusa area please hit me up as I would LOVE to go riding with you when I get my new bike, maybe catch some pointers from the experienced

Any 600 will be a good start...especially in comparison to the yoyo's who get a Busa as a first bike! The SV is awesome, but the CBR is a also a good one. Wear all yor gear and ride within your means!

the gixxer 600 will eat up a sv 650 lot more bike in the gixxer just give yourself plenty of time to do your learning curve from dirt to street you should be fine don't push it and be safe, post up pics when you get whatever And welcome to the board

Any of the 600's would be a good start. Of course the NEWER 600 are far more advanced than the older ones for sure, speed and power. I rode a 99 CBR F4 for 2 years then stepped up to the busa. And believe it or not, i wish i would have kept the CBR and just bought the busa as well. Good luck. TAKE YOUR TIME. I know that when you get behind the bars of a street bike and you get somewhat comfy with the basics, you will wanna she "what she can do". Thats cool and all, but by all means, make the progression a slow one and you will NOT regret it. I promise. Good luck in your search, and BEFORE you buy, let us know what you have in mind.

Take care

Scott

With all the positive feedback I've been getting I'm thinking a Honda CBR600Fi or Suzuki GSX-R600; sound like good options to choose between?

All the current 600's are good! You can also look into the Kawasaki Ninja 636 ... it has a slipper clutch and all the gizmos!!!

This is probably THE most squiddish question ever asked:

How safe is it to no-clutch shift on a dry shift bike?

I've been left with the impression that if it's dry shift the bike was meant to be shifted without a clutch BUT it's not recommended for all of your shifting; true or false?

IMHO Momma Suzuki put that clutch handle there for a reason.

RE: the bikes, If you're timid or don't like hurting your back, think about the Kawi ZZR600. Plenty of power, good torque and more comfortable than a 636 on longer rides. It's also ver predictable. BTW, you're not a squid in my book. Unless you like to ride in flipflops. Please tell us you don't plan on doing that.

ROFLMAO!!!  No flip-flops for me and I don't think I'm timid, maybe a bit cautious but that's good right?
