Hard Starting

Hm alright I finally got around to getting my bike out for riding as its been nice lately. Problem is that it takes awhile to start. It cranks like normal but takes awhile to start. I literally have to try it 5 times before it'll fire up. I assumed it was the injectors being clogged so I sent em out. They came back today put em back in and its doing the same thing. I used a flash light to look down in the throttle bodies and there seems to be a LOT of carbon built up on the valves. How do you clean that out w/o harming the engine any? and could that be the problem with the hard starting? Thanks! Also there are no FI codes. (trying to give as much info as possible here)

Check the plugs...

Also, check the battery. It may sound like it's cranking, but a battery going bad can cause weird things...

Interesting, I'll check it in the morning. I was thinking I should pull the plugs, but never thought about the battery. What price range do new batteries run?

sounds like plugs to me. soon as you take them off i bet there is alot of build up on em. does it ever stall. do you have pc. what is your idle set at. do you use the fast idle to start. my idle is set at 1400 and i never have to use the fast idle.

I would say maybe fuel filter or fuel pump dirty...but that would cause you to stall every now and then

It never stalls on me I have the idle set at 1400 and ya I have to fast idle to get it started. I have a pc3 on it.

Interesting, I'm pretty sure it's the battery. I pulled the plugs and they looked fine so I decided to do a test and hooked up some jumper cables from my truck to the bike (hard as he|| to do btw) and cranked it, started up in a hurry. So new question here, I found a pretty cheap battery $56. Scorpion is the brand name. Anyone ever heard of them? Any reviews?

If you buy a cheap battery you'll have the same problem, or at least it won't be long until you get the same problem again.

Buy a 235cca battery, the stock one is just weak.

Yuasa YTZ-14S is the one you want.

Phew $200, better be a sweet battery

Oh ya, nobody gave me any pointers about cleaning up the carbon on the valves. Any takers?

Seafoam! Works wonders for me. Never used it in my Busa, but cleaned out the carbon build up in my friends SV and my Katana. Go to Checkers or your local car parts store and pick up a bottle of the stuff. First you warm up the engine, I like spraying a few squirts directly into the intake. then fire it up until you see smoke, shut it off and let it soak for a while. Finally fire it up again and piss off the neighbors with a bunch of smoke
