Hayabusa..anyone use one to sport tour?

Hello Folks,
Man I hate starting a new forum as I always sound so lame.  I'm new here, but not new to riding, I've been on bikes for thirty-seven years (man I'm getting old since that first 1967 Honda trail 90!).

My most recent ride is a 1985 V65 Honda Sabre that I picked up six years ago (you can see it here this last August on Rabbit Ears Pass in Colorado  http://pageproducer.sisna.com/fnowens/rabitear.jpg).  I've put 40,000 miles on that dude, it's got 51,000 now and it's been an absolutely spectacular bullet proof machine.  But I've got the itch so I'm going to add a new bike to the stable in the spring (yeah I'm keeping the Sabre!).

Most of my riding is sport touring, one to two week trips.  I average two or three trips a year and have been seriously considering a Busa as I ran into a guy in Banff last year with one and it seemed like a decent rig with the soft bags and trunk he had on there.  Sure looked the part!

I haven't found a "search" function here yet, still looking, but I'd sure like to know if any of you use a Busa as a sport touring mount.  To give you an idea of the type of riding I do, the other machines I'm looking at are the FJR1300 and the ST1300, but I like soft bags over the hard stuff because I think it's more versatile.

Obviously with any of these bikes, even my Sabre, max speed isn't a concern as they all go faster than stink (some a little faster than others!), but I want something that can maintain 90mph...all day...with an occastional blitz to warp speed when necessary (ok, just once would be fine because I seriously need to be able to blow my Buddies FJR off the road as he's done to my Sabre repeatedly).

But my concerns are how would a Busa be for and all day rideability, 500-800 miles, and hows the protection from the elements (I understand there's a taller windshield available for the Busa?).   I also wonder about the chain drive as the others are shaft, and fuel range as the Busa has a 5.5 gallon tank?

Unfortunately I've never had the opportunity to ride a Busa, closest I've ridden is a Blackbird, but evertything I've read (most recently Cycle Worlds Speed Wagon article) indicates that the Busa could be a spectacular Sport Touring rig if it's set up right.

I've sort of lusted after a Busa ever since they were introduced, and now may be the time.  So do any of you use your Busa's for this type of riding?  Any tips or insight you care to pass on?  Thanks!

see the diagram for help with the search button..

The biggest problem I see with touring a 'busa like that would be tire wear.. i'm sure you would switch it off to some strictly touring tires and do much better than most..

normal sport tires are lucky to last 3,000 on the back... I personally have more rear tire changes than oil changes... thats a bit annoying.

several guys have added bags, and you would probably want to lower the pegs, raise the bars a bit, and put a touring shield on it.

pretty easily done though.. less than $1250 additional I'd say.

Ridgerunr,
Welcome.  My parents live in Cedar City (outskirts).  Weather is probably about to take a dive on ya?  Anyway, the search function is in the upper center of your screen.  It is between the Support and Hayabusa.org icons. (it has three swirly things moving around it...)  Anyway, I know he isn't the only one, but the first Sporttouring guy I think of is Pashnit.  He runs motorcycle tours out of California.  Do a search for him, or for sporttouring....in fact, I'll help ya out:

Hope this helps.....

I find the bus very comfortable for longer rides. I didn't buy mine to take to the strip, bought it to travel on. Unfortunatley my schedule doesn't permit any 1-2 week rides..(wish it did!) But I've done several 400+ mile days on it...couple of near 1000 mile 2 day runs. I love it. I have not changed anything yet.

Pure ego is correct about tire wear, expect to burn thru a rear tire in about 3-4k. (my first is toast @ 3600)

The range on my bike is around 200 mi. If left stock, you should get around 40mpg running out on the road...even very spirited riding will still get you 38 or so. The tank is 5.3 gals. I usually start looking for fuel @ about 150 mi's or so.

Get one. You will not be dissapointed!

For decent tire wear and performance (rain, and med level type twisty) go with the Conti force max.  I'm more than please with my over the road trip to Colorado (Hayabusa.org First Annual MeetnGreet

) where I hooked up with a few cool azz, Playaz from the board.  After our two day chilln and riding venture was over

a few us creeped over to Wy. and S.D (Crazy Horse,Mt. Rushmoore) for a few more days of getting our roll on,before heading back home to Ohio.

I put over 4000  miles on these tires with no heavy signs of wearing, and will probably get another 2000 mi  very easily.

Welcome aboard and Keep your knees in the breeze !

30,000 miles in the past 14 months on my 'busa.

But my response is in the linked thread. Enjoy

Busa's are great, but you may also consider a Bandit 1200 for a sport touring. They don't have as much kick as the busa, but are very strong bikes as well as very durable.

You won't be disappointed I was very suprised at how comfy the busa was when I first rode it. over 8000 miles since march it is very addicting to ride you'll just love to go ride around.

I love my Busa, but I wouldn't use it for long-distance, sport-touring. It's the chain thing. I've had my Busa out on long rides and I get anal about cleaning and lubing the chain at proper intervals. I'd like to not worry about that.

I've been looking at the Yamaha FJR 1200. Nice bike, shaft drive, made for sport touring. Wouldn't trade my Busa for it, but it would be a nice stable mate for the Busa. In the end, it's your decision. Do what's right for you!
