I bought a d&d full system a while back and now after about 2000 miles the black portion is starting to turn gray and rust. Does anyone know of any paint that i can slap on it to get the color back but that is heat resistant up to whatever temps the pipes get to. Will powder coating hold up th that kind of temp?

How about having them Ceramic Coated?  They will look good forever!!!  Or nearly...  Check out Jet Hot.

They do colors as well, and the product by all accounts whoops butt. Excellent customer service, should run around $170 or so I think...

already ahead of you im not getting everthing done just the part that sticks out from under the belly of the bike to the cans. I wanted the paint to go on the caps of the cans

i used VHT header paint for my other bike and it cam out good and has held up to the heat so far. you can get it at jegs.com i baked mine in the oven, helps with the resistance. ran me 20 for three cans. i was painting yellow so i need a few coats. black will need less.

matt

Is baking necessary or can i just leave it out to dry

Just make sure you get a paint that is designed for these high temps....I know there are high temp paints that only are goo to 600F and some to 1000F and I don't think that is good enough for the temps of our exhaust....your best bet is that header paint...but make sure you are extremely clean when the paint goes on....if there is any dirt or grease under the paint it will flake right off....

And don't get any of that dupli-color crap, a buddy of mine painted his mustang headers a few years back....we were hanging up at the track and after a run he came back and the paint was burning off, it stunk really bad and made a mess....Good luck...

I think powder coating would be the best, but the VHT header paint is the most cost effective...

If you don't have an oven wouldn't installing them and running the bike for a while kind of cure the paint also...just curious? I know if I did this my wife would kill me if she came home and there were exhaust pipes in the oven...

well i was looking at a jegs and it said that running what ever you were installing on would help but i winterized my bike already. I think the powder coat would melt off too. The paint i was looking at was good to 1500 degrees. Should i attempt to strip the coat that is already on the headers before i paint them?

I had my headers done by Jet Hot a few years ago with their chrome ceramic coating with no problems, Him.  Yes, if decide to do them on your own, then you need to look for a paint that is 1400 degree rated for it to  hold up, but for the cheap price Jet hot is willing to do it and gurrantee, you would be better off sending it to them.

Just my .02

Powdercoating would run probably between $150-200 and you can choose any color you want....I found that doing a search engine on the web can get you hooked up with some good PC companies....

I have a friend in the coating business and took my header to him last winter, as it was the normal dull dark gray color.  He told me that powdercoating probably wouldn't hold up and that any gloss would quickly dull out of any finish from the heat.  We decided to remove the factory ceramic coating and recoat it with a black ceramic coating.  I should have just had him stop after beadblasting it and leave it bare stainless steel because the black ceramic coating came out - you guessed it - a dull dark gray.
