i have a spare header and was thinking of cutting off the left side outlet and weld a plate over it, to make a cheap 4-2-1 exhaust. would this work ok, or will i run into any running problems ?

Yeah, it'll work fine. Too many folks get all worked up and think if you change the exhaust in any way with no tune you'll damage the engine or the bike will run terrible, not so. Having the bike tuned is ideal and will make it perform at it's best, but isn't a must. There's a thread here where a member used the stock gen1 header and one of the stock mufflers for a cheap single side system, and he says it runs great, no suprise.
The performance may/may not be what you hoped for, but again, even that exhaust can be tuned to run better. Check out Boostbysmith.com(site sponsor) for the ECU Editor. It does alot more than a power commander.

this is what i have done to my spare header.

If the left pipe was cut and moved up for a smoother transition into the right side, performance would be slightly improved. But it looks good and will run fine. The rule of thumb for a tuned exhaust is that a dual system will make it's power in the low to midrange. Where a single will make peak hp higher up in the rpm's. Good job:beerchug: And be prepared for some idiot to come along and remind you that their $1500 exhaust will make a few more hp than yours:laugh:

It will work but certainly not much HP to be had cause that crossover hole is pretty small and not a very smooth transition. If you spend that little amount of time on the header you might as well go all the way and make a true smooth 4-2-1 setup like I did IMHO.
