I replaced my tires this weekend, and after putting them back on I decided to clean (kerosene) and adj my chain. After I got it clean I had it on the rear stand and put it in gear watched the odometer after 1 mile I put the chain wax on then ran it on the stand again. I was about to shut it off when my wife noticed real thick black (gear lube like) oil leaking in the area of the front sprocket cover. I shut it down took off the left fairing and restarted it, but this time I didn't notice any leak. I put it back on the ground and had my wife sit on it, in an upright position, so I could see the engine oil site glass and it was completely full of tan (fresh) colored engine oil. I change the oil about 200 miles ago and have checked it at least 2 other times and it was at the full line, so why is it over the full line today? Sorry for the rambling but I wanted to include as much info as possible.

Year of Bike?? Smell of oil Im thinking its from the chain cleaning . You never said wether you warmed bike up before you checked oil cold oil takes longer to settle in the glass then warm causing you 2 diff readings depending on check times..How much oil on floor are we talking im rambling now kerosene could have loosened up built up chain wax and dripped down..In my opinion best way to clean a chain is wd40 spray on a rag then wipe chain .. less mess then karosene and more control..

It's all the gunk thats been captured in the front sprocket cover. Chain lube, dirt and just road grime from rainy days. If you want to do it right you should remove the sprocket cover and clean the whole area. It's amazing how much dirt and gunk you will find there.

BusaSamurai,
The bike is a 2005, it was at temp when it was on the stand, the engine fan had just came on right before I shut it down. I did not smell the oil, wife cleaned it up while I was making the original post. The size of the puddle was about 2". My wife and I were just talking about what you said about, how the cleaning may have loosened up some wax and it fell, we think that makes sense. I just checked the oil again, after washing it and leaving it set for just over an hour, and the oil level is back where it should be, right at the full line. I guess everything is OK than right? Thanks for the help.

BTW, thanks for the tip about cleaning the chain, I hate the smell of kerosene, I just read in the manual, that was the best way so I did it.

I have a 05 as well and yesterday it was raining so i decided to take the sprocket cover off and holy#### what a pile of crap in there.I was cleaning my chain periodically before this and shortly after the chain was cleaned it would be full of gunk again,i can see why now,the chain was running through the old grease inside the cover.

How often does everybody clean the front sprocket cover. I changed the front sprocket about 1000 miles ago and cleaned everything before putting it back together. So should I do this every 500 or 1000?
