**6/15/04 all works thanks for the help!!**

Ok just went and p/u my new 03 busa with a mr turbo and
all of 3k mils on the bike.  was told the oil pump for the turbo
will alway run when the key is on (per Mr T)
well after about 500 mile ride home my bro pulled me over
to tell me I was blowing smoke (OIL and lot of smoke)
we got it off the road and checked things out and no sound
from the oil pump.

now this is where I ask for your help.
looks like I must call Mr T for a new oil pump unit but
would just the lack of the oil pump make the bike blow
oil out the pipe (in the form of smoke) like fools we did
start the bike and the bike will run fine then after a few
mins. the bike would start to blow and we would shut it down.

what do you all think?

ya it was a 700 mile trip so it hit it a few time, the boost
was only set at 4 Lbs and I never got the R's over like 6 or
so and never got the bike over 140.

I talked to the seller of the bike and he said the oil pump
should be pumping all the time the key is on and now
I hear nothing. I think it's just the pump but how do I tell
if the Turbo it's self went...

Once you make sure there is oil going to the turbo then see if the turbo spins free.

DO NOT RIDE THE BIKE UNTIL YOU FIND THE PROBLEM. tHE TURBO BLADES WILL SPIN ON LOW BOOST.

talked to Mr Turbo (Terry - cool dude & lots of help)
I pulled the oil pump unit apart and looks like this was the
issue. I asked them to send me a new one. should have the
bike up & running by Wed of this week.

Ya I will let the bike sit as I did get the pump working but
just to be safe I will sit until the new unit is in.

Hay NE thanks for the help

Is the smoke coming out of the exhaust or is the oil leaking on the engine and then burning off? If the smoke is coming out of the exhaust it sounds like the seal on one of the bearings (intake or exhaust side) has blown and it is spewing oil through the intake or into the exhaust. Had this happen on my old Mazda, looked like a fog machine coming out the back of my car. Wouldn't happen at idle, only when the revs started to climb and the oil pressure increased would it spew out a ton of smoke.

Ya TP, looks like the oil pump was not pulling the oil out of
the turbo so when it got to mid height on the turbo it
just blew oil into the pipe and smoked away.

should be good now the people at Mr Turbo were real help
as was NE.

take care

So the oil was being pushed in the turbo and not being pulled out fast enough? I suppose if the pump was locked up it may not have allowed any oil to move out of the turbo and built up enough pressure to push oil past the bearings. Hopefully the seals on the turbo are still ok. I am interested to see if that fixes the problem.

All Good Today!!

wow that Mr. Turbo (Terry) was way cool, talked to him
on Monday and told him the oil pump was dead, we walked
me over how to pull the pump apart to same me $ / time but
the old pump had stopped for good.   I called Mr T at 2:45 to
tell them I needed a new pump ASAP and for a small fee
the part was at my door the next day - way cool.

I dropped the new pump in, pulled the pipe and cleaned out
the exh side of the turbo then bumped the waste gate to 6Lbs
and ,,,,,,,,, worked like a charm.

Man this is one fun ride. I have put more than a few miles
on about 4 BossHoss bikes but,
kick my a$$ only a Busa could run like this.....
Wow life is just too good to be true
some time.

anyway thanks for all the info and just thanks

p.s. what do i do with the extra gears? 4th 5th and oh my god
time stopped 6th gear - God must ride a Busa

Great that you are up and going.  Make sure you monitor everything very close.

I would highly suggest getting an extra oil pump and carrying it with you, ESPECIALLY on trips! They fail very quickly due to the heat and chemical breakdown from the oil. I was talking to Mr. Turbo about their pumps reliability, and the guy I was talking to was bragging (if you can call it that) that he knew of one guy that said they had a pump last 4 whole years.....not exactly a great thing to brag about, IMO.

The reason you need a pump, running all the time, is because your turbo is mounted too low, not allowing the oil from the turbo to go back into the engine via gravity. IMO, when stuck in the problems, its much better to go with a mechanical pump solution (or move the turbo) because there's no "reliable" electric pump option.

Thanks for the heads up on the pump issue. I did not know
of a "mechanical pump" ? I have just started into the world of turbo busa and the people on this site have been real help.
I did not know I could go to a mech oil return pump?

I can't speak for 'busa's, but on the ZRX, I modified the oil pump routing to act as a scavenge pump. Worked very well. There's other options, such as a making a reservoir tank under the turbo and then pumping it out of there, but usually space makes that a challenge.

The problem with having a line coming going from the turbo directly to a pump, there's just not much flow from turbo's, so the pump is working overtime trying to get the oil out. A reservoir would make it much easier on the motor, because there wouldn't be any inlet line pressure.

Uncle Bob, thanks. I will talk with the local turbo shop to see what we can do. I hope to put about 8-10k on this thing a year and if I must put a new oil pump in it each year that will suck. I don't take it to a track just road use. thanks again for the input it's so cool to have a site like this were people like me can get info so fast - thanks again.
