Anyone catch this on the history chanel last night? Amazing. In 1964 a 9.2 magnitude earthquake struck Alaska and devastated Anchorage and many other communities. Fissures opened up and swallowed entire parts of town...it was freakin' amazing...and scary as heck! Apparently Alaska experiences tons of tiny quakes every day. The ground is so unstable because the North American and Pacifiic plates are consistenly grinding against each other causing consistent rumbles. The quake of '64 though, caused an entire community to slid off into the sea and humongous fissures to upen up in the earth, which, of course, swallowed things up. The footage and pics are just amazing...

Oh! Also, a guy speaking about the earthquake, stated that the force generated by the quake was about equal to, I remember this clearly, this is no typo...the atom bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki...the force was equal to about 63,000 of them....no lie...
