How To Hardwire GPS?

05 Busa LE

Since I don't ride in the rain, I'm thinking of using my car's Nuvi 260 on the bike's Techmount when I ride, and would like to have it hardwired to my '05 Busa.

Anyone have description / pics of the "installation"? Also, I assume I'll need a new power cable from Garmin, right?

I have the Zumo 550, and use a powerlet plug.

Get your extra auto cord and zip tie the end that plugs in the GPS near the handle bars. Run the end with plug that goes into the cigarette lighter under the tank, around the battery and into the tail. Zip tie the cord every foot or so to keep it out of harms way.

Next, go get one of these or something similar to it from Radio shack.

And get yourself some 18-20 gauge wire. Run a ground from the battery to the tail and solder/connect to the negative on the power socket. Run a positive from the battery to the add a fuse (put a 10 amp in it) and solder/connect it to the positive on the power socket in the tail.

Now, all you have to do is plug in the gps under the tail, and plug the other end into the GPS.

Yer Welcome.

I just cut the cig adapter off added connecters

+1 All I did was go to walmart and buy a cig female plug and hard wire it to the battery and then mount it in the tail so I just have to plug in the male gps wire and im done. Then just unplug it in the tail and then its off to the car or truck or anywhere else.

i grabbed a cigarette outlet from radio shack and wired that from my trunk to the pos and neg batt terminals. i took my garmin power cord and ran it from the trunk, left under seat ,and under the left side of gas tank with the other existing wires. my gps power cord hangs nicely right under my triple tree for easy connection. i then mounted my gps to the triple tree. i am about a few hundred miles deep with it and it's never malfunctioned or fallen off the mount. 12VDC Car Power Accessory Outlet - RadioShack.com

I took the DC adapter apart.
Solderd two leads instead of the plug (to bypass need to install a 12V plug) and wired it to the brown accessory lead in the nose (live only when on).
