The mechanic at the dealer said 1/2" is way too tight. He said one inch up and down

suit yourself..... I run mine anywhere from 1/2 to 1" slack. Haven't had it jump a cog yet with 270hp.

Manual says no more than 1.2" of travel for complete pull in slack...meaning when at rest w/ bike on kickstand pull no more than .6" up and .6" down.

But to my surprise, the mechanic at the dealer said it should be about 1" either way.

I've been keeping mine where it just gets snug before it can touch the rub block on the underside of the swing arm, though I can still make it touch by pushing harder. I believe you can do more damage running too tight than vice-versa.

I keep mine between 1" and 1.2"

or

.5" up and .5" down   TO  .6" up and .6" down

And got more than 30,000 miles out of my stock chain

A loose chain is better than a tight chain. Just not so loose that it can come off the sprockets.
