I think the fact is half the country want to go deeper into narcissism and lasciviousness whereas the other half don't like the taste of modern culture and want to go back to something more prudent and (for lack of a better word) reverent. These want to be able to look up to their leaders as men of honor, they want statesmen and the sensible laws that come with all that. I wouldn't call trump a statesman but his efforts to turn back the clock are in that vein. perhaps there will never be a true statesman again? A man of honor and integrity, that doesn't chase after women and wealth. Many have come along portraying themselves as such but for the most part they were paper cutouts, political images of such.
At the end of the day the mass of people choose what they want, like a murmuration of starlings they swing this way and that together. I think of the UK with all it's middle eastern immigration. For a long time the people were happy with that, they had lots of kebab shops and the immigrants did all the menial jobs, their taxes supporting the older Britons moving into retirement. But there are no free rides, the increase in population has certainly helped keep the social security system from collapsing but now the criminal aspects of these new cultures is running rampant. Sweden is an advanced version of this, the government having hand-grenade amnesties because of the gang violence, who could imagine such a thing 20 years ago? The former Prime Minister herself came out and said the immigration was a mistake. She and her all women cabinet of bleeding hearts opened the floodgates and handed out teddy bears.
But many didn't want teddy bears.
