I am really starting to consider becoming a locksmith. I have all the tools to pick locks and I am pretty good at it I think. The only problem is, I have ran out of locks to practice on. It is just too expensive to keep buying new locks just to see if I can open them. So I am asking if any of you have some old locks laying around without keys, let me know. I would be glad to pay shipping. I took my picks to work today and just started picking locks instead of using my keys...My co-workers were pretty amazed at how quick a lock can be picked.

Thanks

Hope you all have a Merry Christmas!

That is one lock I would at least like to try to pick.  Every lock is like a puzzle to me, it is addicting.  Once you solve the puzzle, it isn't as much fun to do again.

Master locks are by far the easiest locks I have picked.  The hardest lock I have to pick is an "American Lock" series 1105.  It is commonly used for LOTO(Lock out/tag out) when working on machinery in the workplace.

That second link looks good. I will try to snipe it.

I don't guess you can pick the locks that don't have keys (like combination locks... I've got a few bike locks that I surely can't remember the combinations!)

If so I'll see if I can find em all and send em to ya!!

I worked as a locksmith for about 7 years for the government. Long story, but I was pretty much self taught. I bought the Belsaw course after working in the position about 6 months but never completed it. There is some good info in it. I always enjoyed picking locks but that was only a very small portion of the job. I really enjoyed the work but there is a lot of investment in the craft compared to the return.

I might have a lock or two that may be more challenging for you!

I understand there is a lot more to it than just picking. It is a hobby that I love to do and I just want to learn as much as possible about it. I may go talk to my local locksmith and see if I can go with him on some jobs.

You can learn quite a bit that way. Electronics is also a big plus these days.

As a locksmith do you also learn how to open combination locks?

Sounds like you've got a cool hobby there, i tried once but i don't think i have the patience. Someone who picks locks for a living must have the patience of a Saint!

You can open them also. The easiest way is to just push some shims around the hasp and push it into the lock.

Does locksmithing look like a fairly decent living? Whats the $ like? By hour or by job?
