The situation:
I put my Corvette in storage for the winter, so I'm driving my truck as a daily driver. I drove up to the mountains Saturday to play in to snow. I noticed my steering was a bit loose, but manageable. On the way back I almost wrecked my truck because I wasn't feeling any feedback from the tires. I have gotten 161,000 miles out of it, but the steering is getting really sloppy, and I can wiggle the right front tire with my hands (Unsafe to drive now). Yesterday I started changing the ball joints and tie rods in my truck. Both sides need to be done.

The ranting:
Last night I got the left upper ball joint replaced. This is the first time they've been changed, so I have to drill out all the rivets to replace the ball joints. I drilled out the riviets in the lower, and I got the ball joint seperated from the hub. Several hours into this ordeal now, but I can't get the lower one out of the hub. There isn't enough room to get it out.

I called my dealer to verify a horrible though, and I was right. I have to remove the driveshaft from the hub, and drop the whole hub, to get enough room so I can remove the old ball joint.

Today I needed to get a 36mm impact socket so I can remove the hub from the driveshaft. I also had to find the mounting bolts for the passenger side upper. I spent several hours today tracking down the socket and bolts. I get back to my house to continue and I grabbed the wrong socket drive size. I noticed that the CV boot on the driver side is torn, so I need one of those too! Now that I have the correct socket I can remove the driveshaft, but I can get enough leverage on the axel nut without applying the brakes. What a PITA!

Now I have to wait until my wife gets home from work to finish removing the hub, but she works late tonight. I need the truck for tomorrow, so it's going to be a very late night!

Going out to fix, or shoot, the truck. Whatever works out best. Maybe I can burn to ashes and turn it over to insurance. Not like it really matters too much. I've got more cr@p going on now than I want to handle. The closer Chistmas gets, the harder it is to enjoy life.

try to wedge something between the steering wheel and brake pedal , or put the tire back on and set it on the ground .

Got it out...finaly! I wedged a strait punch into the brake calliper, then I stood on the braker bar to loosen the hub nut.The left side is almost all back together now. I'm waiting for the CV boot seam to dry now. Tomorrow I'll tackle the right side. On the bright side, I made progress today. On the downside, I tripped and fell on our carpet shampoo vac, and broke the handle off it with my fat a**. Now I need to buy a new shampoo'er thingy for my wife. I was in a bad mood when I picked her up from work, so she probally thinks I broke it on purpose. I also noticed that the swaybar bushings are almost completely shot on the truck. That willbe my project for next Saturday. At least that will only take about 30 minutes.

We named the truck Frankenstein!

The saga continues.

i tell ya i never need to work on anything until winter and when i need my rig the most, i yell i scream, i throw shiat. the wifes only comes in to give me coffee smokes and to tell me it will be ok. then runs for the house. glad its coming together man

I had a truck we named Fankenstein too. Repairs didn't seem to be too bad. I know what you mwan about having to run out for tools in the middle of the fix though. Seemed like it always took something special.

Nothing is made to be easily repaired or replaced anymore... Hope you giterdone.

I had a '90 Chevy P/U with 187,000 miles on it when I sold it, so I can honestly say that I feel your pain and frustration. Repairs are always an adventure with multiple trips to the parts store.

Hang in there
