not only can you have a laptop on the plane, there are many with internet access while in flight.

flying weekly, I can say this is the likely scene.
1. the guy or girl beside you will likely crap and then say something to you...if they are feeling a little bullish they might beat you down with your own laptop
2. the air marshal on the plane (yes there are tons of them and they are on a LOT of planes, ever wonder who's boarding with the pilots?) might place you into custody or just kill you on the spot
3. if nothing else, you will get an incredibly warm welcome when you land from among others, the FBI, TSA and local police.

Cute though just not so much to anyone that flies very often
