If you can't find kerosine to clean the chain...

UPDATE: Found a 5 gallon can at Lowe's for $32. HOWEVER, I had to plead w/ two different guys to go and look after they told me they didn't have any. Always ask them to personally look...tell them a friend of yours bought it from them before.

Looked for kerosine everywhere (WalMart, HoPo, NAPA, AutoZone, Advanced AP, Pep Boys, AmeriGas, K-Mart) to clean the chain.  The only place left is a little ma' and pa' hardware store that was closed at 3:00!  

I'll try tomorrow, but if it doesn't work is gasoline the next best thinge

do not use gasoline. diesel will work as well as kerosine but diesel isn't as clean as kerosine(chain doesn't know that). for what its worth all I've ever done is hose my chain down every 100 to 200 miles with wd-40 and I get great chain life.

So I should go and buy a 1/4 gallon of diesel to wipe and clean the chain if no kerosone is available?

I read on Web Bike World that using WD40 over time is not good either...Supposedly it prevents the chain lube from penetrating the chain.

O-ring chains are internally lubed. the o-rings keep the lube in and the dirt out. when you clean and lube an o-ring chain, your getting the grime off and lubing the exterior parts and saving the o-rings. When the chain is free of grime an crud on the outside you will notice that it shifts nice and drives quiet because there isn't as much friction. I like WD-40 because its easy, it cleans and lubricates. The down side is, it doesn't stay there long. Thats why I said 100 miles 200 max.

go to a hardware store like menards, home depot, lowes. They all sell kerosine. You can buy a 5 gal drum for like $20 and it will last your lifetime.!!!

This time of year here Lowe's only carries kerosene in 1 gallon cans for about $9. It is in the paint section. In the winter time you can probably find it in 5 Gallon cans here because of heaters, but with the temp at 100+ everyday last week, we don't need no stinkin' heaters.

Just did mine last nite with diesel. Worked great! The problem I've heard of with wd-40 is that the lube doesn't stick after using it....

Mineral spirits should work and is cheap and easy to find. It also doesn't smell to bad.

Hell I don't use Kerosene or WD-40 or anything else, I lube the Chain spraying from the inside out, down into a towel, that's about it. Apply to a warm chain and it blows most of the gunk out.

When the chain makes a little more noise? I apply a little more lube till it quiets down. Seems to work great. Occasionally I wipe it down with a terry cloth rag.

Easist thing to use is a rag sprayed with W-D40 wipe down and spray with chain wax or equivilent
