I picked up my new 'Busa 700 miles ago. Been laying low takin' it easy breakin' it in. Gettin' use to it. Ya'll know the drill. It ain't my first bike or my first sport bike. I love it.
My question is this: On the rear of the stock muffler are some allen-head screws which are tack welded in place. If the welds are ground down can the screws be removed, if so can some of the packing be removed, or are there any other worth while mods that can be made to stock mufflers? I've tried the "search" but haven't had any luck with this topic. Your feed back will be appreciated.
Thanks

My husband did exactly that, broke the weld and removed the screws...he then drilled 3 - 1" holes in the baffles and it gave my Busa just a bit more of a grumble...they sound good, no problems...

I'm sure others will chime in with what they've tried as well...welcome to the org and post up some pics of your new Busa

All you need to know

try 6 holes and see if ya like it first! i went with 9 which in my opinion, was perfect. great mod. if you like the stock pipes but want to achieve the aftermarket sound.

Thanks for the replies and the info. I'll be grindin' and drillin' this weekend. I'll do the nine hole mod. Just want something a little different from stock with out the big bucks involved here at Christmas time.
I've only had the bike for three days. Been ridin' for thirty-five years. I am amazed how smooth and quick this bike is and I've yet to get into the upper rpm's.
Thanks again ya'll

just a piece of advice, try using a dremel for the allen screws that are tack welded but be careful it won't get away from you, i would go w/ 6 holes in each can first before trying 9, and use a step drill bit (cone shaped) and make 1/4 inch holes evenlly space for best results. good luck and take it slow.

So is it a must to tack weld the allen head rivots back in place after tightening or can you just use some super duty lock-tite?

Why only 6 vs. 9 and why 1/4" holes vs. 1/2" holes?

o.e. , i tightened my screws back up and used lock tight. i believe the holes where 1/4 inch but don't quote me on that. as far as 6 holes vs. 9, it will have a lighter sound with 6 but i prefered 9 for the low throaty sound.

Thanks,

I have a dremmel, but no welding tools so lock-tight will have to do.

I'll start with six 1/2" holes, cut the center pipe down 1.5", fire it up and see if I need more holes. If so drill 3 more then put the cap back on.

Sounds easy enough.

hi welcome
lock tite ok.
i did 9 -1/2" and removed 1.5" off the tube.
once you go loud, you never go back

I think I'll try something different; go in through the front with an extra long bit and drill some holes in the forward baffle plate. That way no endcap altering if it sounds good. I bought a spare rashed muffler on feebay to experiment on so no big loss if it sux. I'll report back with pics and results.
