ya know... I really hate to sound like an ####### and all, but he wasn’t wearing a fricken helmet. Sorry don’t have much sympathy.
I don’t know this guy, I have heard of him and that is about it. But I cant tell you this much, if my best friend was killed because he wasn’t wearing a helmet I would not have any sympathy for him either. And if anything I would be pissed.
It is so fricken stupid. Yeah some idiots might look at a stunter who is wearing a helmet and they might think "that guy is playing it to safe" but probably a small portion of people. Most wouldn’t care, they would realize it is smart to wear a helmet especially when stunting.
Not only that, but when you are a public celebrity, you have people that are watching you and might admire you, what kind of signal are you sending people when you are doing stunts with out protective gear?
And now he has sent a signal, the signal is even Indian Larry is not invincible.
Hope I didn’t offend anyone, but I get ticked when people don’t wear proper gear, I get even more ticked when people in the spot light don’t set good examples and then I get real upset when someone dies due to stupidity.
One fricken brain bucket and he would more than likely not even be in the hospital, he would probably be working on some bikes right now.
R.I.P. I.L.
Ok, I read this one all the way through because it strikes a nerve with me.
To start with, I'll go on record sayin' that I NEVER roll out without a lid no matter where I'm goin'. In fact I never roll out without ANY of the gear that I already have. It's how I do things. It's part of ridin' for me. To me, life on a bike includes proper safety gear.
With that said and out of the way, there are several different ways to look at this. You could say that he was stupid for not wearin' a lid. It was said on another board I frequent that it was sad that an individual as talented and successful as Larry would place such a low value on his life as to not wear a lid. Ok, fine. That makes sense on a certain level. I'd feel stupid and squidly rollin' without my gear.
On the other hand, ridin' and life on a bike means somethin' different to every single person on this board, and every other person in the world who rolls on two. Maybe to Larry ridin' "free" and uncovered was his idea of the ultimate life on a bike. Maybe that was part of what ridin' was to Larry. Same with stuntin and tricks. I don't do 'em. Maybe Larry's stunts and tricks were a vital part of his life on two wheels. Wearin' a lid and not doin' stunts might have greatly taken away from Larry's enjoyin' what he called "LIFE".
If I had to ride without a lid, or had to stunt, or had to ride with my nut sack hangin' through a hole cut in the crotch of my pants to live out my idea of life on a bike I'd do it, naysayers be damned. I wouldn't give a poop whether anyone approved or not. Part of my idea of life on a sport bike, or more specifically on the busa is insanely fast runs occasionally. I know full well that I could go to jail, lose my license, kill my insurance rates, LOSE my JOB, crash and DIE, etc. The thing is, I don't give a phuq. Well, I do, but I'm willing to take the risk in order to be able to "LIVE" the life I want to live on two wheels. Fug da police, fug the folks who say I'm stupid to do what I do, fug me. It's my life.
So, I'm grown. Larry was grown. If either of us make a decision and pay the ultimate price, or any other price, as long as we don't take someone else with us, who has the right to judge us and call us stupid, squidly, idiots, etc...?
Fwiw, I see your point, Ron. It just stripes my ass to hear someone preach on this in a thread about a fallen rider. It doesn't bother me to see a gear whore thread reference an accident or a death in order to drive the gear nazi point home. What bothers me is to see a post about gear in a thread that basically started out as a fallen fellow rider thread. If he was just rashed and broken up, yeah, flame his ass. He's still alive. He's dead though. Gone. Already been judged by the only one that matters. The only thing I can think of to say about it in this case is a prayer for his soul and for his family. He could have crashed naked with hand grenades tied to his neck. No matter. He was a fellow rider and he is gone.
It's all good. I'm not upset, or holdin' anything against you regarding your post. I'm just voicin' another side to the coin that you flipped out onto the table with your comments. No flames, no argument, just layin' it on the line.
Now, I think this is officially the longest reply I've ever made without postin' pictures. Hmmm, can't have that. Here's one for all to enjoy. Speakin of gear...
