Is getting the carb sync really important?

It's that time for the first service on my 2000 R6, but me and my dad are doing it ourselves, except for the Carb sync because we dont have the tools until we purchase them in the winter. I was just wondering if it's good to get this done right now or to leave it be. My yamaha dealer said it was not that important because it's so close that they might not be off that much and I would be wasting my money. What exactly should I look for when I'm running the bike to see wether or not it needs to be done? and is this something I should REALLY consider getting done?
