Is the price right?

I've got some new tires ordered Pilot Road 2), and was checking around to see what it would cost to get the tires mounted and balanced.
A friend of my wife's, told me that he could do it for $30 a tire if I take them off the bike. He a machine and proper tools to do the job.

Is this reasonable $ ?

For me money important and if I can save a buck, I need too.

Is this something that I should try and do myself? I don't have any of the, 'Proper tools', but I can always improvise.

Any comments welcome,
Thanks.

At $30 a tire you could pay for a Harbor Freight motorcycle/car changer and bead breaker at the cost of 4 tires. Bolt it to a stout 4x4x3/4 in plywood and you have a very good tire changing station.

Richard - Cycle Gear is cheaper than that w/ the wheels off, & if they scratch them they will fix it. I have the Harbor Freight machine, but am waiting on a new dismount bar. I only do my race tires.

IMO get the best price you can on tires (incl shipping) then see how close local retailers can come. you're gonna be on the bike a while, better to try and build some sort of relationship then walkin in cold.

Plus They balance them at a real shop!

I balance every single tire I change to the point of no wiggle or wobble that can be perceived by the human eye or gravity. I have not had one problem or complaint from any tire mounting I have done. Street and track both. Over 150 MPH and smooth as the surface I was riding on.

cycle gear does it for $15/tire, off the bike.

dunno if they'll do tires you bring in.....

Correct. The Cycle Gear price is for tires purchased from their store only. Last time I asked them it was $35+tax for a walk-in with wheels off.

The last set I carried in to a local dealer cost me just under $89 out the door.

That was my last straw....I bought a HF changer and ordered a no-mar bar and will do them myself now on. I also bought a balancing bar of FleaBay.

What I have saved in tire changes on that machine, it has paid for itself already....friends use it also.

I think you all would be better off to buy from a local shop and build a relationship with them. Some dealerships will mount tires they sell for free. It may cost you a few more bucks but you'll have a warm body to deal with when there is a problem. Keeping your money in your local community at times like these is vital to your local economy.

Something to consider! :beerchug:

i have a tire and wheel machine 1400$
in my pole barn.....but I do know they charge 25-40$ a tire around here as all my friends keep begging me to do there's for them
my only issue is the pole barn is 4 miles from my house

Right now I'm considering eating for the next couple of weeks. I'll keep my non-professional, never-balanced-that-has-never-had-a-complaint, tire changing equipment. Thank you very much.

+1.

I need to keep all the money in my pocket I can. My way of helping out the local guy is giving him a chance to get close to the deals I can find else where. When he blows me off and tries to get an obscene price, I walk.
