a friend just popped over,cool guy,says I know yer laid up,here,have an XBOX. So I said,cool,thanks.
So I hook it up and all I can get is a message on the screen that says... " yer xbox needs service".

So after calling him up I find out he has n't used it since having some "two-bit" tech install a 120 gig hard drive into it. Which apparantly, if working properly allows you to download games, store games, rent games and burn them onto the hard drive(not that I would do that).

Any thoughts? My bud was pretty dissapointed. He said if I cant get it working, tear it open and remove the WD 120 gig hd for use in one of my pc's. Dam nice of him.

Thing is,I wouldn't mind playin' the thing.

Any idea's? I'm a tech where I work,I can repair just about anything.I'm used to working on machines that are solar powered and have sattelite connections. But I've never encountered a fugged up xbox before.

reset button maybe?
bios flash maybe?
wipe the hd clean?

any help would be awesome.

I believe it's got to be "Modded" with a chip in order to play "Backed up" games on extended hard drives. I know there's tons of websites that talk about how to set that stuff up

The only thing I can think of would be to get somebody to image (Ghost) their standard Xbox drive, then write that image to your drive. Do you know anyone who's willing to open their box? Can you get the original drive?

hrmm....interesting. Tell ya what, Rubb....I know a couple of game freaks here. I'll check with them and see what it may be. I have one good friend in particular who's done the mod, so mebbe he can help.

Any other details I can tell him? He's right up the street from where I work and he's a good friend, so mebbe we can figure somethin out ta help.

the original drive is long gone.

I know of a few girls who.... might.... never mind.

I'm up the creek without a paddle eh Jug ?

yes WW, it is modded, chipped,an' huge drive added.

Me thinks they should have just let it be(just like the Beatles song) an' not fugged with it.

I'm thinking I have a new 120 gig hd for 1 of my pc's.

Hrmm....

What else can ya tell me, Rubbah? What other symptoms does it have? Any clicking noises? Unusual whirring?

I'm meeting up with my friend tomorrow....I'll talk to him more. We're also tryin to get in touch with the guy that mods Xboxes here...he should know something.

They were saying that it could also be a software problem. I'll keep on sniffin over here on my end, see what I can find out for you.

uuummmm Rub.......you might have a wee bit of a problem there. Turns out Microsquish played a little game with X-box's. Now I'm not a Xbox person and this could be a rumor......BUT......There is going to be a lawsuit on microsoft for their X-box's. Turns out that if they are modded at all, the bios can detect it. If it does, it runs the CPU at 100% which eventually fries it. Microsoft says they can do it because it states in its EULA that if any mods are done, they have a right to disable the device. The disable is to fry it. I hope thats not what has happened to yours dude.

Rubb, any error code displayed besides the "your xbox needs service", message?

You need a modchip or a TSOP flash to play backed up games. Just adding a hard drive won't work. If it has a modchip installed do a search for Slayers Evox Auto Installer (I can't do it from work as the proxy blocks gaming sites).

Burn the Slayers disk to a CD and boot your Xbox with the disk. The slayers disk will flash the bios with a version that will allow you to play backed up games.

I pulled it apart to look for any obvious fried circuits, cracks on the motherboard, everything looks intact.

thanks sled.

No other symptoms Pac. Just this crazy lock-up. If nothing else, this is a good little puzzle for my busted brain.

update... no mod chip installed I just looked.

I cant find a free version of slayers either.

Go ahead and buy one?

Have you tried booting it up without the hard drive at all? Sounds like you need the mod chip and slayers for that route to work. I think the box will work without a hard drive installed but it will load slower and not allow the saves without a memory card. Maybe that will get you

We should put together an XBox fund for RSD (he can buy his own damn XBox Live subscription!).

I'll kick in the first $10.
