Is this estimate right?

So in another thread, I got and took many people's advice and am weighing my options. I had my guy do an estimate on the damage. He said the oil pump got gunked and under acceleration it didn't lubricate effectively. It damaged one rod, one crank, and needs about $3500 of work, he says.

I'm trying to weigh my options here. Should I sell the rolling chassis and cut my losses? How much should I expect out of an otherwise great condition bike?
Should I send it off and get it bored? How much more am I looking at to do that?
Should I ebay the parts and cut corners to save money?
Should I just tell the guy to do it and send me a bill? (Is the estimate reasonable?!?)

It just seems like a lot of money not to have the whole engine rebuilt from the bottom up, but then again, I'm not in the business so I don't know.

It sounds like this guy is cutting corners, if he is replacing the crank, he should be replacing all the bearings and rods. Replacing the crank is 1/2 of an engine rebuild, its the main part of the lower part of the engine. Just my .02

Dude if you need to rebuild your moter spare no expense and DO NOT CUT CORNERS. In fact if you are going to rebuild your motor just go ahaead and put a 1397 or a 1441 in the bike and if you think this guy shady then do not use him normally your first gut feeling is right find another builder.

What builders are out there in my part of the country that can tell me what it'd take to do a big bore rebuild? I'd love to give one a call and really hash out my options.

If you take the 3500.00 then factor in that the head surface probably needs decked being that it's a 5 year old engine with 8600 miles that probably could also use a set of new valve guide seals , which both require complete head disassembly --- it's going to add up to more bucks and still be a used engine for the most part.

Enough so that there is some merit to the thought of bailing out and buying a new leftover 2007 for $8900.00 or thereabouts while they are still available .

I bet you could get close to that. If you parted it out I know you could. A bare frame with title and low milage sells for between $1700-2300. Make a list of all the parts on your bike, Frame, forks, swingarm, tank, ect and look to see what they have SOLD for on ebay in the last 2 weeks. I bet you could sell your bad motor for around $500-800. Then use the money for a new 07 or 08. Thats what I would do if in your shoes.

If I sold the bike, you think I could get $4k out of it as is?
The 64k question there.

The economy is poor but people are still building custom bikes so there's at least some demand for good titled frames and the rest. Depends somewhat on your location because of shipping costs .

I know that if the bike was clean and took no more than 1 day to have it at my place it would have a new home for that price .
