Picked up a nail today...my question is; would this tire be safe to ride on if plugged properly...
Is this tire safe to ride on?

For me, no. I only have two tires and I dont want anything wrong with either of them. If I am away from home and pick up a nail, plug it and get home then replace the tire. Its a matter of preference and you will get opinions either way.

I'm with twotonevert when it comes to plugging tire. I just don't trust a plugged tire. I would plug it if on the road and I got a flat though. But I never 100% trust a plugged tire for long.
Granted, that's just because of my personal risk acceptability levels. So that said, that is an easy puncture to patch, and would most likely be fine for the life of the tire. I just do not like "most likely's" when you only have two tires.

I hope you were being facetious. The traditional plug system was not invented to fix nail holes on tires that are capable of turning 5515 rotations per minute.
Pashnit has a plug kit that is very safe it has a tire plug kit or go to a place that does a patch on the inside of the tire and it will be fine . Heres the link to the bullet plugs on Pashnits site . If you don't like that Idea send me the tire

If I were to fix it with intent of riding till it was done I'd patch it.
I'd feel comfy about just riding it though, nothing fast or any hammering out west would occur.
Mentally I don't think I could be comfy getting up to speed on a patched tire. A plug would be for just long enough to get me to the dealer for a patch.

Ive never had luck trying to plug tires on bikes, they either still leak or they will just outright tear out on the first hard acceleration. I'm with the others, get a new tire... it sucks but it could save a wreck. Sucks, looks like the tire is pretty close to brand new too

Advantage to plugging the tire,, Save 120 bucks
Disadvantage of plugging a motorcycle tire,, Plug blows out, or the carcass of the tire is weakend as you are leaning into a turn at 70 MPH with cars coming the opposite direction and KAAAA FUKKN BOOOM! Rear tire fails
Buying a new quality rear motorcycle tire.
Advantage,,, You know the tire has been approved in quality with no defects and this alone is worth a piece of mind which outweighs any dollar amount.
Disadvantage,, Cost 120 bucks.
WOW 120 bucks is it really worth risking your life? I dont know about you but I value my life more then 120+ bucks...

Does anyone have first hand experience with a plug or patch failure? Or is it all speculation, fear and intimidation?
I have never experienced any such failure on a plugged or patched rear motorcycle tire. Then again I'm not out on public roads tearin it up leaning into sweepers at 70mph...

Call around and ask your local motorcycle dealer shops if you can bring your motorcycle tire in to be plugged and let us know how many will do it..

YES!!! Brand new rear with about 250 miles. Removed nail and installed mushroom type plug. Stayed in place less than 30 miles. A sudden flat at 50 mph sux big time. Replaced that plug with snake type to get home and a new tire ordered. Tire trashed with less than 300 miles on it.
Will only plug a tire to get home or nearest shop, whichever is closest. 1 mile on tire or 2000 doesn't matter.
Op- the nail in mine was in almost the same place.
