Isopropyl Alcohol on chrome

A while back, some buddies of mine and I went riding. We all decided to clean our bikes before we hit the road. A guy who was riding with us had a Ducati 1098 and he had chrome wheels, exhaust, and etc. When he went to remove the water spots from his wheels, he pulls out a $.99 bottle of rubbing alcohol. It worked. It cleaned and shined well.
I was wondering if an other members heard of this tip and how and if it will damage the finish over time.

??? Never had water spots.. But again, I keep it clean and I clean after every ride.

I used to do that back in the 80's ... after time u just get careless and your tires will suffer for it.
