Well, I haven't been on the bike for about a month as it has been too hot outside. I am all geeked up and excited about riding and I change the oil the day before. Fresh full synthetic. I get up at 5:30am and get ready to ride. I leave at 6:00 before the sun is up. It is dark and cool. Awesome weather. I get on I-75 heading north and run about 80mph the whole way. The wind was buffeting me around and making the bike feel squirrelly, but I figured it was nothing.
I get to my turn around point (McDonalds) and I smell oil burning. I look at the bike and don't see anything so I figure it is a car nearby. I have my drink and head back to the bike and notice a small oil spot under the bike about 4 inches in diameter. I figure Dang the bolt must be leaking on the pan. I get on the ground (all 325lbs) and the bolt is bone dry. No leak there, so I check the oil filter and it is bone dry. Hmmm, I look around hoping a gasket is not leaking and I notice the oil filler cap is not there! I figure I forgot to put it on yesterday when I changed the oil.
Well, now I'm pissed! I'm so dang mad at myself I'm practically hopping around in the parking lot. I look at the bike and GOOD GOSH the ENTIRE bike from the oil filler hole on back is coated in brand new synthetic oil!! The back tire has about one third coated to the oil filler side. Oil all over my back brake rotor. I then notice my Kevlar Draggin Jeans on my right side are coated/drenched in oil and my tennis shoe is soaked in oil. I calm down after some passerby gentlemen point out I have an oil leak! I call the Bike Tow number on my phone. They take 3 hours to come get me and drop it at the Dealer. I then have to take a cab home from the dealer. The dealer is cleaning it up, installing new rear brake pads and ordered a new filler cap.
So, all in all this was my ride:
Synthetic oil change - $35.00 saved $20 by doing it my self.
Leaving oil all over the north bound lanes of I-75 - Free
Soaking my shoe and jeans in oil - Free
Soaking the bike in oil - Free
Bike Tow - $125.00
Dealer - $135.00
Yellow Cab - $20.00
Knowing I saved that initial $20 on the oil change- PRICELESS!!!
Luckily it was only down about 3/4 of a quart so it was no big deal. The buffeting by the wind was my tire getting oil under it. Thank God I didn't go down!lease:
