its gone from bad to worse

hi to all,

after buying my second busa i found it needed the cam chain recall doing. so i booked it in. 4 weeks wait for a dealer to be able to fit me in. in which time i didnt ride on advice from dealer.
bike is 2000 ry model and only done 3100 miles as it was only used for a year or so.
i took bike in a van yesterday to have cam chain adjuster done, dealer said it would be a 3-4 hour wait so i went shopping with the wife.
about dinner time the dealer rang and said "we have a problem" the crank is twisted and and we cant get the primary drive gear off. so it needs a new crankshaft £700+vat and everything else associated with a complete engine rebuild.
the bike is no longer covered by warranty.
however, the suzuki bigwig was at the dealers as luck would have it, he see the problem and admitted that there had been a few cases of this in the past and as its such a low mileage bike suzuki would cover the work and all costs. i cant tell you the relief i felt.
hats off to suzuki but come on, how long you been building bikes? this really shouldnt be happening.

now the reason for me telling everyone this is, this can be caused quite easily by bump starting the bike and it back firing, aparently it loads primary gear momentarily therefore twisting the splines on the crank.

i hope this doesnt happen to anyone else but i now have a 7 week wait for parts etc, etc. luckily i live in the UK so the weather is poop and i wouldnt want to ride anyway.

Damn sounds Bad and Good....So I am Happy and Sad for you...

Sounds like you did get lucky though. Just think, your going to have a near new Busa soon!

yes i suppose thats one way of looking at it. the only problem is that the compound where they keep the bikes when not being worked on is outside. my bike has never spent a night outside and 7 weeks is a long time in british weather time. a bit upsetting really

I would guess that 80% of busas have the spiles twisted it really is not a problem due to the timing is on the other side of the crank

you could always pick it up, and bring it back when they get the parts in.. I wouldn't want mine sitting outside either... be damned if I would baby my bike all the time just to have it sit outside in the weather for no good reason.

what they are saying is that they cant get the primary drive sprocket off to get the tensioner blade out. i looked and see the problem. the gear just wouldnt come past the twist in the splines.
do you think that there is another way??

i actually wanted to bring bike home but they said it would delay process. whilst its there they can work on it if they happen to get cancellations which i thought was fair comment. i really am trying to hide how pissed off i am

it will come off you just need a little force.Trust me on that I did over 60 recalls at the shop and I think only 3 slid off. the rest I used a bit of force and it came off and then a little tap and it was on. The down side is the cam timing might be a couple off but usually you could not feel it.

in your opinion what do you think would be the best thing to do?
bearing in mind the work and parts are all FOC.

i am not sure really. if i say i want them to take the sprocket off, am i asking for problems in the future. is a new crank going to end up the same or have they revised it ??

you obviously deal with this sort of thing everyday so what would you do?

thanks for input into my dilemma.

the more i sit and think about this the worse its getting. i think that i will ask them to take the primary drive gear off (obviosly with a puller or something) and just complete the initial recall job. i am an engineer and i know for a fact i could get it off without to much hardship.
my main concern is that all the parts in the engine will have to come out after only just getting bedded in nicely, nothing will go back together the same, even with the best will in the world. obviously this will lead to premature wear etc on all the components. basically the bike will never be 100% again.
have you ever see one of these cranks broken in that area. if they are putting a crank exactly the same back in is there any point to having the work done anyway??

cheers

you could always go buy a cover for your bike and give it to the dealer and say "put this on my bike I don't want the paint fugged up" I'm sure they will do it.

yeah done that first thing this morning and i asked them nicely if they could keep inside at night which they said yes. so i am not as worried now. it doesnt take much bad weather to make a bike look like crap. still no dates on parts delivery yet. they are now saying that there is a starter motor problem which is also under the recall so that has to be done aswell now.
quite unbelieveable really, ive had two gsxr 750 with absolutely no probs atall. this is my second busa and second lot of probs, big style this time.
stupid as it may seem i still dont think i would want anything other than a busa.

yes i have quite a few mods in my head, will be nice to start doing them, still at least i will be able to save some cash for the mods now. and start collecting the bits together.

at last some good news, all parts in stock at suzuki uk and on way to dealer, now reckon that with the backlog of work i should have my baby back later part of november.:) :) :) :) :)

so just got myself some wavy front discs in celebration:O

Good deal Dae! I'm glad Suzuki pulled through on this one for you, otherwise you'd be Busaless!

:tounge:
