Jeeezus....my busa just fell over

Well, there I was in the driveway lovingly polishing the the plastic, getting all excited about the prospect of taking it out for a mega blast...and then...the inevitable...it rolled off its sidestand and fell away from me onto the driveway. I still cant believe it, the driveway is pretty level and it seemed stable enough, obviously upon reflection i should have left it in gear. I tried to hold it while it rolled but i was on the wrong side , upon picking it up i was devastated to see just how much damage has been done.

Ready for this? ...ok... here goes...

The items that need replacing are... Left hand fairing, top fairing, screen, mirror, rear bodywork, ...

Also, because i have 4 into 1 system fited (ie there is no left can) the entire pillion/exhaust mounting has cracked off leaving the remains of an aluminium spur protruding from the bodywork. There is also damage to the crankcase, but i think that is just a bit of scraping.

The insurers are not going to be happy people, but they will never be as sick as iam now. Ive had it a year now and the last thing i expected to happen was this..

Anyway, the motto of my sad story is... always leave it in gear on the sidestand!

Im now kicking myself very hard.

I feel your pain!

I've always had a paranoya about that happening, and leave mine on a padock stand whenever possible. When I park it at work (occasionally), I put a block of wood in front of the wheel. The Hayabusa must have one of the worst sidestands ever fitted to a motorcycle!

Best of luck with the repairs

As said before, put it in first gear and roll it all the way forward, until there is no slack in the chain any more, before putting the weight on the side stand. Mostly, just don't ever trust the side stand. It doesn't help at this point, but you're definitely not alone, in having that happen.

For goodness sake just deal with it. Put the bike in first and roll it to stop then put your stand out.

It's not just the Busa. You do this with any bike.

Wake up.

DP, with all due respect, of the dozen or so bikes I've had, the Busa is the only one that ever fell off its sidestand, and I think its a new experience for most of the busa owners that have had this happen to them. I never put any of my previous bikes in gear when I parked them.

sherm (aka THE SIDESTANDHEAD)

I'm on a mail list for a different bike (non-Suzuki) and it's the same thing over there. They claim that their bike has the worst side stand design because the bike rolls off the stand. Of course in every case the rider had left the bike in neutral.

I wonder, do all of you guys that park your bike and leave it in neutral do the same when you park your car?

Same thing happened to me when I got my bike new,TacoBell stop in Sunnyvale, bike fell on my leg while I was walking to Taco Bell, talk about being stupid while people looked out the window watching me pushing my bike off my leg.It happens and you are not the first.Oh ya my leg saved the bike no scratch or broken part, only broken pride.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but I don't care...I have no sympathy for stupidity!!! Put it in GEAR!

Bear in mind that this can happen even when left in gear, if the bike is on a slight downwards slope. Over time, the compession will leak away, allowing the engine to turn over.

Best answer, park on a slight uphill slope!

Are you sure that you cabbages are engaging the stand correctly, all the way forward??

After reading all these tales of woe I had a real good look at my stand and how the bike sits and cannot see how the bike can fall over without being pushed hard....even on a slight down slope.

mm1,

Regarding insurers, sounds like your "bike fell off the trailer".

I have been dumb enough to allow a bike to roll off a stand, but I've never been dumb enough to blame the bike,or to pay for an add on part, rather than correct the stupidity.

The Busa stand is actually very stable compared to some.

Thanks for all your comments, believe it or not i do usually leave it facing uphill or otherwise in gear, dont know what or who i was thinking of to allow that to happen yesterday.

Anyway, to the guy that wanted to buy my old plastic, yes it is scratched, its unlikely that i will get the original plastic back when the new stuff is fitted as legally over here in UK the store has to retain it all for 6 months incase the insurance company want to inspect it. However, anything is possible if you ask the right way.

The good news is that ive managed to find some old pram wheels which will fit nicely on to some stabiliser arms. The plan is , next time my brain thows a wobbly, the stabiliser wheels ping out of the side of the bike and hey presto!..it all ends happily ever after

Bye for now.

I did themotorhead recommended mod, grind a fat chunk out of the stand where it meets the frame stop.

On this forum alone there have been about 15 reports of busas roling off their sidestands. In most cases the bikes were parked on what the owner thought was level ground. When mine fell it was parked on level ground that had a slight ripple in the pavement, and this ripple caused the sidestand to retract.

The busa sidestand offers almost no resistance to retraction when there is a slight forward force on the bike. It is a design defect that can be corrected easily and some people are smart enough to take corrective action.
