Jumpstarted my Hyundai with the `Busa!

How about that.. it worked!

I walked out to the car (02 Hyundai Accent) and the battery was dead.  I have jumper cables, and a 2004 Suzuki Hayabusa.

So, I pulled the bike out, popped off the saddle, and hooked up the jumper cables between the car and the bike.  I fired up the Busa, then walked over to the Hyundai, and turned the key.  It worked like a dream.  The busa's headlight dimmed briefly when the car started, but kept running like a champ.  The difference in voltage was apparently not an issue.

So for anyone out there wondering if it works, it does.  Take it from someone crazu enough to try it.

My wife had an Accent for about five years. Great little car, very reliable and you could fit all kinds of stuff inside it.

One goes 0 to 60 in 2.6 seconds; the other in 2.6 minutes.

Go buy a lottery ticket because today is your lucky day.
There is no difference in voltage. There is a HUGE difference in amp draw. You're very lucky you didn't destroy the Busa's battery, charging system or electronics.
As far as shortening the life of those components...time will tell.

should have worked engines are about the same size

yeah no surprise that worked; same voltage and I'm sure the car only cranked over for a couple seconds - no worries, should work everytime without blowing anything up. Hell I've started my '69 Dodge with a 383 with a M/C battery before, works beautiful.

There's a reason bikes have low amp batteries that can fit in the palm of your hand and CARS have 500+ CCA batteries that weigh over 40 lbs. Also, with the exception of a Goldwing, a motorcycles charging system is NOT the same as a cars.

Just charging a little motorcycle battery at more than 2 amps will shorten its life. When that Hyundai started it backfed more voltage @ probably a 90 amp surge into that Busa's battery and charging system and then leveled out to 30+ amps as the cars alternator tried to charge the dead battery. This is in addition to the huge hit the Busa's small battery and charging system took during the starting.

Jump starting a bike off a *running* car is about the worst damn thing you can do to your bikes charging system (next to jump starting a car off a running bike).

I hate seeing this "aww it's ok, it worked for me so it should be ok" info floating around. Someone who reads that information has a good chance of ending up with a trashed stator, battery or electronics. Worse case scenerio is the bikes battery going off like an ACID BOMB in someones face!

If anyone is interested in why this isn't such a good idea, this page does a decent job of explaining it.

What Turbo-Torch said.

Don't do it. Ever.

Unless, of course, you LIKE paying huge bills to replace effed up electrical systems! ;-)

If you MUST jump start a car with a bike, disconnect the hot wire feeding the car battery from the alternator. Once started remove the jumper cables quickly and re-attach the hot wire. This will only work if the car battery holds enough current to run the vehicle until the alt. is hooked back up. It's best to find another cage, but like I said...if you MUST.
Glad it worked out for ya Tony
