If you don't like wearing ear plugs you should keep trying different styles and make sure you get them in correctly.
I too found it a little frustrating when I first tried ear plugs but after getting a good type and practicing getting them in right I was well rewarded with a much improved riding experience.
The key is getting them in correctly. If you do you will never ride without them. It's actually easier to recognize crucial sounds with them in than without. Again I would almost bet that if you prefer to be without them you either don't put them in correctly or don't have a good style.
Ear plugs, in my opinion, are very underated. Properly installed ear plugs are probably the best kept accessory secret around. Give them a fair chance before you give up on them. Those who experience well fitting properly installed ear plugs no what I'm talking about.
