Kickstand problem + Ferry travel

I know, I know.
The horror.

My buddy lives on Vancouver Island and I'm on the mainland so I gotta make these ferry rides happen. Apparently, standard procedure on the BC Ferries is to "secure" the right side of the bike with a wooden block. I'm hoping there's the option to tie down.

Step #1
THE MUST DO KICK STAND MOD!
Many thanks for that.

Step #2
Seek sage advice from the learned folks here.

If I could get specifics about tie-down points on the bike (Gen3) and brands of tie-down straps that would be fantastic. I've read a lot of posts about tying to a trailer, but I don't want to assume that the same advice is necessarily best for a ferry.

Please help!
Anxious old biker needs to sleep at night.

There are no tie-downs on the boats that run from the mainland to the island... just the wooden block. I just put the bike in 1st gear and walk away... although because I'm a fair-weather rider these days, I've never had to deal with rough seas with my bike on board... plus I prefer to hang around the bikes on the car deck anyway enjoying the views and fresh air so I'm always close to my machine.

I'm just about 10 minutes from Swartz Bay, where's your buddy live?

Went up-Island on the GT today, snapped a pic of my bike "secured" on the boat across the Saanich Inlet for your benefit. :p

Saw this last week going to Victoria, BC. But don't ask me, I just dropped mine in the driveway... :banghead:

step #0 !! - damn how often again ???

ALLWAYS - 1st gear in and movin the bike to its engine stop in 1st.

then step #2 onto the "notched" side stand (kick stand mod)
(eventually as a step #3 together with pulling the brake lever with a zip tie)

after all that u can use all other safty - things they offer at the ferry.

1st gear makes it impossible to roll over the kick stand
zip tie at the lever makes it imp. to roll back (how ever)

Thanks. I know it should be a smooth trip, but I've been there when they botch the landing. That's good news about staying on the car deck, I seem to recall last time it wasn't allowed. My buddy's in Victoria.

Hah, actually I saw it, it's the one ferry-related post I could find.
Ouch. I feel your pain, brother!

Brand new bike. First step is to get the kickstand mod done before taking the ferry.

Thanks all, I got what I need.
Will sleep well tonight.
:p

It's only the lower enclosed over-height deck where they force you to leave. The open car deck is free to roam.
