Okay, this is a COMPLICATED and probably UNREALISTIC request, but I have 2 fourteen year old daughters and they both want laptops for christmas. They want WiFi, and DVD players/cd burners. They are mainly going to use them for instant messaging, picture up/downloading and listening to music. They wanted those colored Dell ones, but we can't afford them...not even the refurbed ones! We have to get 2 identical computers so there will be no fighting. They don't have to be new (obviously), but we would like for them to be pretty much up to date and in good shape. We were looking to spend around $700 for both ($350 each) because they are getting other stuff as well! I know that seems like we are being cheap-skates, but we aren't. We are just on a BUDGET!
Do any of you guys work or have access to laptops for low budgets? Me and my family would be very greatfull for any help or ideas!

Thanks
Brian

Way cheap stuff and way bigger than 8gb hard drives... honestly who can use one that small anymore? You should've hit best buy's day after thanksgiving sale. They had a laptop/printer bundle for $229!

Yeah, we had people camping out at Best Buy 3 days before hand! What are those little computers that show up? Are those things new or something? Can't say that I have ever seen those before!

UMPC

ultra mobile pc's

All the rage! If you are in to that sort of stuff!

I also recommend tigerdirect.com I bought this computer five years ago and it was great to me, they are running some good sales right now on laptops.

And while purchasing on credit isnt the best or smartest things people can do, some times it is needed or at least advantages. With Dell you can get a decent laptop with payments around I think $30.00 a month maybe per laptop. So you could take $700.00, stick it in savings and make the monthly payments from the savings account, it would give you at least 7 months of not having to worry about coming up with the rest of the money at this time.

Just a few options

Man, this is starting to become confusing! After looking at so many, what am I supposed to do?? LOL!!

Computer Salvage.
RT 20
East Granby, CT.

They have IBM R51'S with everything you wanted for 399 each.

That includes a 100% 1 year warranty parts and labor .

We just bought a Refurb Dell 700 Series Latitude for about $275 + shipping. on EBAY.... it took a few tries, but the person we bought it from had a few and we just had to stay on top of the auctions.

ya might try local Ma&Pa computer shops that buy and sell used gear. sometimes you find killer deals there. Also, ask your work. Company's dump good stuff cheaply when replacing things

Not the best price but do shop around! They are small!

Only problem I see here is that they aren't really even laptops. Sure they are compact cause there is little there. Anything marketed as a "Internet Device" is going to be just a couple of steps above a Blackberry in terms of computing power and flexibility.

With vista out now, and the size and abundance of music and stuff these laptops should have at least 2Gigs of RAM, and probably no less than 100Gig Hard drives with a decent 256Meg video card. Otherwise there is almost no point in going forward. If you cannot play MP3s, and watch videos, look at Digital photos, and run some basic entertainment software there really isn't much point.

Buying a crippled laptop, or a 4 generation old laptop will almost be worse than buying none.

You can get by with less if you are running XP, so that might help, heck with XP even 512Megs of ram isn't the end of the world. So that might be the way to go, cause Vista is a fat POS of an OS.
