Lean angle and dragging hard parts

I was looking at my tires while cleaning my baby this weekend. I was startled to notice how far over I'm leaning it these days. I'm not what I would call an agressive rider. I live in the Panhandle of Texas. We don't have just a whole lot of twisty roads around here. Most of my tire scuffing comes from riding in town and taking the few curves that we do have at high velocity. My question is to those of you who really ride the busa hard in the corners. How much of the tire is left when you're grining the footpegs on the ground? Are you all the way out to the edges?

I'm riding an all stock (at the moment) '02. I've still got the factory Bridgestones on it. My rear tire is scuffed up pretty good within a half inch of the edge and I've never put a footpeg on the ground. Am I coming close or do I still have a fair distance to go? My goal here really isn't to be dragging stuff, but I don't want to be changing my underwear if I get some grinding one of these days.

You got some wayz to go; but watch out for that dessert sand its like black ice or a freshly paved rd and you will then be body surfn lQQkn like rd rash.

Keep your kneez in the breez Playa!

thats a pretty technical question. if one wants to grind down their pegs, home depot makes a cheap attatchment for a drill. you could grind your pegs in a turn without getting to the edge of the tire depending on how you attack the turn. a fully loaded suspension at the apex with a good lean and proper suspension should get you to the pegs without being on the lip, but that really depends on the ride height? the type of tire you use plays a role as well as air pressure. remember this, the faster you go the less you have to lean to decrease clearance, because the faster you go the more your suspension loads, if you are coasting at 20 and grind the pegs, odds are you are past the edge of the tire, if your burning down the corkscrew at seca and you hit the bottom of the hill(turn 10) at a good clip you dont need to get to the lipp to grind case on a gixxer because the massive downforce will fully load the suspension, you will however have to be in a pretty good lean to negotiate the turn at speed. your question may indeed be the advantage GP has over superbike as grinding anything is never a good idea, the friction only slows you down. GP bikes are so narrow I dont think they have a problem with it? thats a good question for the goon on TWT.....

Thanks for the info Twisted. Like I said, I'm not looking to be grinding hard parts and I wanted to make sure that I wasn't getting close yet. Everything is still in the stock configuration. I'll probably be adjusting the suspension at some point, but I feel like I need to do some more reading and research so that I actually understand what I'm doing. Unfortunately I really don't have the fun twisty roads to ride around here to play in, so the suspension adjustment hasn't been a crucial thing.

When we were at Laguna I heard a couple of scrapes coming down the corkscrew when the bikes were racing.

I have big feet, so the sole of my boot hangs off the peg a ways. I have never hit the pegs cuz I feel it on the ole boot first. You could always adjust yer feet a bit if you are worried about grinding pegs. Still no courage to stick a knee out yet.

you riding on the balls of your feet? If you aren't, you might wanna consider it. It will give you more control to shift your weight and control the bike... Not to mention, if your toe hits the street the wrong way and goes under the peg, it hurtz like a mutha!

Um I do not spend much time on the edges but I have been there a few times. I am 6'1" 215 and have yet to touch any hard parts...

Dunnno if that helps you any, but IMHO if your touching hard parts on the Busa you need to either adjust your suspension, or edit your riding style some and get your butt out of the seat a little.

yeah, i ride on the balls of my feet. thats why my feet are wider than the peg. you are right about the control you gain. its like night and day.
