Limited Clearance

Hey all.I finally got around to posting on this site. Quick question. Has anybody else scraped through their left side engine cover or their lower fairings or their kickstand or their exhausts. I would'nt have mind if the pegs were ground down to the foot rubbers, but they are barely scraped. What kind of indicators or those. You expect that the bike would be set up where the pegs would let you know a very long time before you end up with this amount of damage. See, I was curious because I feel that if you are riding the motorcycle reasonably then you should'nt expect to have to shell out dollars to replace parts that were'nt crashed. I keep reading the warranty and it says under what is not covered"normal wear and deterioration of such items including but not limited to.......body panels blah blah blah" and under "your responsibilities: you must operate the motorcycle in a normal manner yadda yadda yadda". I don't think that I should have to pay to replace these parts. I would appreciate some feedback.

anyway i went to suzuki today and the service manager said that i was 1 in maybe 20 people who could do that to this bike. i said thats nice. just because my capabilites are greater than the clearance on this bike, do you think that i should have to suffer. I look at it like this. with no indication of possible damage to the bike from the anywhere but the actual damage, at that point its too late. does anyone follow? what i'm saying is that if i was scraping peg for a while you know what to expect next. but if you dip into a turn and you hear a brief grinding noise, when you look at the bike the peg feelers should be worn a little, not your engine cover, fairing, ect. ,ect. I want compensation. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

Have you made suspension adjustments?
According to those who have made extensive
adjustments you can gain some additional
clearance. Not sure if this will help
you or not but that is the only info I've
seen concerning your problem to date.

Yoshsuzuki, the feeler on the peg on the left is longer by about one inch than the right, is yours? may be the wrong feeler was placed on your bike. or they where installed backwards. David G.

Sebastien... What racing school did you go to. Was it good? Cost? What kind of bikes?

Yosh,

I have no doubt you are a great and brave rider but maybe you should try hanging off the bike a bit more. That alone will give you twice as much ground clearance. Have you ever taken a racing school? I never grind anything down anymore since I have taken a 3 day racing programme and I now ride much harder and faster than ever before. You could also get longer peg feelers than the stock ones, like the ones that come with the optional center-stand.

I hear you Yosh! I ground the right fairing panel after only nicking the right foot peg. On all my past bikes the foot peg would start to bend up before anything else started grinding. That was my clue that hard parts were going to start touching. I do have the suspension still at stock which is a tad firm in front and soft in back, but I would think correcting this would make it worse since the fairing lower that touched is in front of the peg. I definitely expect more feedback than just initial contact before I start worrying about other parts.

I'm going to talk to my dealer also, but I doubt we'll get much sympathy from them. Ill let you know.

Just curious about you fairing grinders-are you wearing the tires all the way out to the edges? Since this is my first real sport bike my cornering comfort zone is still before I drag anything. I am taking a school in September to learn better skills on a track.

as far as possibly having the incorrect feeler on the side of the bike that got worn down . nope i know that the left side has the longer feeler and that the feelers came on the correct sides. the tires are almost at the edges but i know now that if was to ride the tires to the edges i would probably end up with a motorcycle alot skinnier than i started with i.e. thinner case covers, lower fairings, skinnier exhausts. get it????? i was away for a few days so i have'nt had a chance to follow up anything as far as the posibility of warranty work via my dealer or american suzuki. so until i hear anything else ...........

Mine are worn to the edges both front and back, but on the back I've rubbed the little rubber squiggies off a long time ago, whereas the front still has a few left on the edges. I've touched the left peg down, but haven't scraped the case...yet. That thing sticks out pretty far.

I haven't gone to the dealer yet because I was busy yesterday, but I don't think there's anyway they'll replace the fairings or your case because it's a design issue, not a workmanship issue. If your dealer did replace your fairing/case, you'd just scrape it away again anyway. I think our best bet is to tweak the suspension like what has already been suggested. I, for one, am not keen on hanging off on the street.
