After my last tire purchase (rather, after looking at the bill

) I and my accountant (wife) think it's time to invest in a tire changer. What would be the best model/manufacturer you guys would recommend?

No Mar, hands down the best and easiest to use. Go with the base model and get the longer breaker bar.

They're good but pricey. I did mine by hand for years with a set of spoons. I have the Harbor Freight Motorcylce Tire Changer now.

I have the harbor frieght unit and it works ok, just needs a little elbow grease... if expense were not an issue, No Mar is how I would go. The only other thing is that after you change the tire, you may want to balance it... Ian at Redline sports actually has a tire changing kit on his sponsor site that includes a chaning stand, spoons, rim protectors and a balance stand with weights, if you want to check that out...

I'm in the same boat---tired of spending all the cash for a tire change. I got the Harbor Freight model and the no-mar bar. From the reseach I did here, seems like lots of guys got the same set up. I haven't tried it yet--but will be this spring. Let me know how you make out. BTW---no mar has lots of good "How to do it" vids on their site

E, stop looking in my window! You're freaking me out!

 Your too funny!

Last time I looked the base model of the No Mar was just under five bills and they offer balancers as well, up to and including a unit to handle the fatties.

If you do go the Harbor Freight way, they sell a plastic protector for the base so you don't tear up the wheels. A lot of folks that have gone the HF way, will still buy the No Mar breaker bar.

Keep us posted on what you do!

Also, those socks don't go with that shirt:lol:

I went with the HF stuff and the no mar bar.... I do not use any other protectors etc and have not nicked or torn up a wheel yet.. (just gotta make sure the wheel is locked down from the start)..

NoMar is great stuff but the $600-1200 price tag put me off as bad as paying $40 a wheel at the dealer for the same work... (hey I was trying to save money)

I did a home made balancer but I never use it.. I was running Pirelli Corsa III's and they are factory balanced...(yea really!) I am now running BS BT003R's and so far no issues.. (knock on wood)

how often do you change tires ?

I go through at least 4-6 sets a year, and that's not counting the unscheduled changes due to nails,
glass and other road crap.
I once went through 3 rears in two weeks because of stupid debris that I
didn't see in the road (lots of construction in my area at the time).

Plus, I feel like a n00b for not changing my own tires. There are a few things
I think all riders should know how to do, and changing tires should be one
of them. You may not actually do it, but you should know how to in an emergency.
Kinda like taking your bike to a shop for a filter and oil change.
Seems kinda lame but no offense to anyone, I know some folks don't
have the room or tools for some maintenance stuff.

changing tires is not so bad... kind of dirty work but does not take that long after you get the hang of it.. Option 2: friend who has machine (I help a good number of guys out on this side of the country.. (they buy all the beer we can drink, way under the $80 the shop charges "off the bike" :) )

I think I'm gonna end up being the "friend who has the machine".

Talk to John "GixxerHP". He has a sweet setup for changing tires. I don't know make or model but I did see his setup at the motorcycle show. John can change a tire almost as quickly as using a power machine.

You know you have been in a fight when you change a tire with nothing but a set of spoons! But oh what a feeling....

That would be the "finger mashing" NoMar trailer hitch setup... (you had to be there)...

but seriously it works great.. (as one of the official "Bash Tire" crew) He got the full tilt NoMar tire changing system with the hitch mount..

I think I knocked out 6 tires in about 10 minutes (and had to redo my own when I inflated the thing on the grass and filled the bead with "green chit"

I have the Harbor Freight changer w/ the No-Mar bar as well. We have 6 bikes & a lot of track friends so it comes in handy. I use the Harbor Freight balancer as well.
