I have a 99 model and got it sorted.
1 )The best solution is the T R E or timimg retard eliminator, these are usually available from some good mail order stockists and E-Bay, and range from £20 to £60 ( $30 - $80 ) just do a "google" for TRE.
Most fuel injected suzuki's benefit from this as the timming is retarded in the first 3 gears, this little device just plugs in at the gearbox output and "fools the ECU into thinking the bike is in 5th gear.
This TRE totaly fixed all the surging and rough running my bike was having. I even spent 4 hours on a dyno, and bought a powercommander at a cost of £400 an still could not fix the problem, untill i got this TRE and just pluged it in.
The TRE is available for the busa, GSXR 1000, 750 , TL1000, SV 1000, DL1000 V-Strom, etc, and is interchangable with all of them.( one device fits all )
2 )On a seperate note, all 99 and some early 2000 models have fuel filter problems. Small particles of copper from the impeller blades from the fuel pump, clog up the fuel filters causing rough running, stalling, cutting out. The solution, well just remove them, as i did, and a number of other owners have done, it will run fine without the filters as the particles can, and do pass through the injectors. The particles can only be seen under a microscope and are really tiny so wont cause any problems, If you leave filters in you will be replacing your filters every 3000 miles or sooner, and takes about 2 - 4 hours depending on your mechanical ability.
3 ) check your fuel lines ( 99 - 2000 models) The fuel lines tend to kink from the tank to the pump causing fuel starvation, if you lift up your tank have a look at them, your supposed to turn the return hose 1/8th of a turn to stop the hose kinking as you set down the tank.
Suzuki knows of this problem and the 2001 models onward got new fuel pumps and had them fitted inside the tank. However suzuki have never publicly admitted the problem, instead many owners who complained enough got new fuel pumps fitted under warranty, and the rest of us were left to sort or figure it out for ourselves.
I hope this helps many of you, who like me, own or have bought the early models and thought it was normal for a bit of rough running , spluttering between 2000 -3500 rpm and just put up with it. Well it can be fixed easily and permanently an does not require Powercommander's or dyno time, trust me ive tried it cost me hundreds $$$$ and the solution lay in a 5 minute plug in TRE device that cost me £20. Google around the net for more info or try here http://200mph.net/ for detailed pictures, and descriptions of everything ive been talking about !
