M4 pipes are on!

I made a trip to the dyno on Saturday. Established a base line, installed the M4 single side exhaust, then a return trip to the dyno!

I was quite happy with the results as well as a cool new look. Sounds wicked while not overwhelming. We gained considerable HP & TQ at midrange where I wanted it the most. I am a bit courious as to the blip at peak HP after the install? We will chat with M4 next week and see what they have to say. Maybe we are we missing something on this new bike? I'm sure the Boys at M4 will be happy to share their views?

She was running pretty lean down low after the install. She really seem to like the fuel we added. Pulls very hard all the way up, smooth & strong. I hope to learn what may cause the loss of a couple HP at peak power while showing an increase everywhere else?

Here are a few photos of the day! There is no plastic on the bike but photos just the same!

Pipes at the ready!

Ross DeLong wiping her down after the install. Ross is a great guy and holds the track records at both Seattle and Spokane. Guy is as smooth as a baby's butt and blazing fast!

Emissions inspection!

Last but not least, the dyno results! We ran short on time yesterday and I intend to tinker with the maping a bit more later. Although she runs really sweet and very strong, She does need a bit more tinker time!

It is no coincidence that this is you're post number 1340 and it rocks

Looks awesome and I bet sounds

wow, what a funky result.. a huge loss on the bottom, then a huge gain in the middle... have you ridden it yet Steve? is it weird on the street?

Steven, very nice looking can and fitment on that system. A few questions...

Does it retain the O2 sensor? Looks like it might right at the 2-1 merge.

Did you try it w/o mapping it? I recall reading that some shop had not needed to install a PCIII as the exhaust retained the O2' and the ECU corrected for difference in flow.

Did you put in an aftermarket filter? And what if any other mods, PAIR Delete, airbox etc...

Overall will be interesting to see this get mapped out and that can is just some fricken eye candy.

Just curious if any runs were made with the factory 02 sensor in place with your aftermarket pipe.

What did the AFR look like before and after.

Upon further review, that does look like an O2 bung. If it is, I can't see now the factory sensor is going to reach it that far aft without extending/relocating the wire harness.

The red circle below is where the O2 sensor bung should be, if M4 followed the factory placement (outboard of the 2-1 collector for cylinders #3 and #4). These headers don't appear to have a bung for the O2 sensor in that area....

The 02 sensor is indeed in place! It's actually a little further back than the stock position.

The fuel was lean on the low end after the pipe installation. We added fuel with the Teka box and were able to smooth out the A/F considerably. Like I said, it was getting late and everyone was ready to call it a day.

This was the first new generation busa any of us has had a chance to play with so it's a learning curve. I'm looking forward to further experimentation with the first step being a chat with M4. Those guys are well schooled with Suzuki and I'm sure they will be happy to share any info with us.

Thats the problem that 02 sensor bung is too far back to do its job, it needs to be up front as close to the down tubes as possible to get a better reading.

Well yeah, relocating O2's usually need trial and error. Moving it closer should produces more positive results, as the exhaust will have the heat and velocity for the sensor to get its reading accurately. Not that narrow band sensors are great anyway, but a well placed (or thermal protective wrap) narrow-band is better than no O2', closed vs open loop. A possible solution might be to get a weld-in bung from Innovate (or where ever) to put into the primaries, rather than so far aft. That bit of operating temp difference will mess up the data given to the ECU and thus alter fueling, when in fact it may not be rich, just reporting to the ECU its rich because the sensor is cooler than normal, thus leaning it out.

If the consideration is to extend the O2 wiring harness, be sure to use appropriate rated wire, and connectors. I've seen a dramatic decrease in performance where ppl have extended wiring harnesses using off-the-shelf wire from checkers and some spades.

Good luck with the chat w/ M4 I'm sure they will be assisting you in getting the most out of this system. From the looks of it, theres a lot left on the table. I applaud you for sticking to your guns with M4, knowing their history and success etc. where some ppl will think you should have jumped ship to their tried and true wonder system, great job.

Charlie, the 02 sensor wire reaches the bung on the M4 pipes without the need for splicing. You do need to split the wiring sheath up a ways to make it reach. Just tape up teh sheath and it's good to go or put heat shrink on the wires?

I do like M4 and have had excellent performance from their pipes. Those guys have helped us out on numerous occasions with tips to make things function better. They do lots of research on making suzuki's go fast and perform well.

I don't think anyone has a real tried and true wonder exhaust for the new busa, do they?

You got me to thinking about that dang 02 sensor being a problem. I just had a look to make sure, by golly the 02 sensor was never plugged in. I think that may have something to do with our after install numbers. Makes me feel a little dumb but we were all tired and **** happens!

We'll get her dialed in. At least I won't feel bad now when M4 tells me to "Plug in the 02 sensor, you big dummy"!

I wasn't going to right out ask

Good on your for catching it. More to follow later... get some sleep, get some dyno and we'll go from there.

wow,

its crazy how close these bikes are to each other....they actually used my bike for the prototype and LOVE IT..

I did 185.2 on the pipe..

wait till u do the airfilter and PCIIIR..

can u say..HIGH 190's ;)and it feels a TON smoother

Looks like a nice system. I think I forgot how it feels to ride the 08. Mine has been on stands for a few weeks now. Damn winter weather!

I dig that pipe so will post twice .

Those the ticket for the first gens too ? Will the back half fit ?

When you call , ask M4 about it if you would .
