Major checkups

Hello everyone

I have clocked 37000 kms on the bike and it’s 4.5 years old. I have done regular servicing on the bike all this while, but have not done any major check like the valve clearances or the TB cleaning etc. The spark plugs are also stock ones and have not been changed yet.

I plan to take it for my regular servicing next month.
What would you guys suggest me for a detailed check of the bike for better engine life.

Though
I feel a little buzz in the throttle at around 160-170 kmph and bike feels a little rough.
However the Rpm is always steady at idle after a warm up, the bike has never shut off abruptly.

I plan to keep her running as long as I can ride, so now she’s almost 5 years old’ hence the apprehension

thank you guys in Advance

Well, you didn’t say what ‘regular’ servicing entailed but if it was my bike I’d definitely have the valve clearance checked using a new cam cover gasket, and change the plugs. I’ve never had my TBs cleaned but I always use a top tier gas and occasionally add a few ounces of Seafoam to make sure my fuel lines and tank are clean. I’d also change the oil with a full synthetic (I use Amsoil) along with a new filter, OEM or K&N. I change it every 5,000 miles. A new air filter too. I use an OEM air filter. New brake and clutch fluid too and maybe change the lines to braided SS lines. Swapping the brake pads with EBC HH pads will also make your brakes come alive. At your mileage a new chain and sprockets are in order. Any rivet link chain with at least 10,000 pounds of tensile strength will do. Although expensive, changing your fork oil is also a good idea. My 06 has nearly 70,000 miles and runs perfectly. Hope this helps. :)

Regular servicing I meant
Change of engine oil
Oil filter
Air filter (got the DNA free flow filter recently)
Have already changed the new chain set and sprockets
As well as the EBC.brake pads

fork oil,hmmmm
The forks seems to be working fine for me , but certainly I’ll have em checked.

ill get the spark plugs
TB cleaned if required
New clutch and brake oil
Valves checked

I read some where
Get the valves checked only if you notice the indications, like bike not starting
Fluctuating idle rpm and all

how ever I’ll have it thoroughly checked
Thanks mate

hi dehli :)

here a pic of a 4.5 year old fork oil

if you´re looking for some ink take this
and if you want a bad smell take a "nose-full" of your oil´s smell at that age. :(

DO NOT check the fork only visibly, but puz it out, open it / put it into pieces and renew the oil every 4 years / 24 000km - later/older the greasing ablility of the oil is very close to simple water
after 8 years replace the fork seals too.
____________________________________________________

and the valve clearance you allways should control / measure every 24 000 km
and - my exp. in now 35 years - move it at all 16 valves up to their max (manual)

you never can hear a reduced clearance - it allways only get smaller!!!
till the moment the clearance was near to or at zero (at hot motor) because then one or more valve(s) hit the piston(s) and your motor/cyl. head is crap and the motor sounds as bad as imaginable.

and try this link (to my homepage) - there you can read a lot of hints a side to the manual

and what ever you read somewhere (fugg 4 that) - ignore that all
follow only the hints you get here at his board.

Well you’re certainly on the right track. Regarding fork oil, there’s no real way to check it. If it’s the original oil it’s nearly five years old and needs changing. 7.5w-10w is ok I believe. I’d also change the fork seals while the forks are out. Regarding the valve check, our motors are famous for not needing frequent adjustments however, a tight valve is why you (do) want to check them. You won’t feel or hear anything amiss until POP, the valve was too tight and bent. Loose valves aren’t nearly the issue that a tight valve can be. More than not the check will show that they’re within the adjustment levels but then you’ll (know) they’re ok which is satisfying to know when you reach the upper limits of the rev range. And if they are out of adjustment, have them put Into spec and voila, you’re set to go. Good luck with your bike and post up some pics.

that depends a bit on the drivers weight - me, with my 105 kg, use in my gen1 a multigrade oil 5w20 with wilbers springs and a bit less oil volume as they write on their shop - page.
the original fork oil is a 0w - 2.5w - see gen1 manual

street use every 4th year new oil - no matter at all how many km - even the bike stays in the garage the 4 years the oil´s consistence gets bad .

track used i would say every 2-3 months / 2-3000 km

yeah - i agree with you to set oneself sure what valve clearance one have - by checking it. ;)
and if you don´t want to do the check every year (if you don´t join the racetrack with high rpm for hundreds or thousands of miles per year) i recommend to set the clearance to its upper measure and forget this the next 24000 km (the use on track shortens the interval to around 5-6000 km!!!)
and
when the "line" of 70-80000 km is behind you the clearance will never get as fast as in the beginning small and i guess the interval can raise up to 28000 km.
but nevertheless the clearance must! be controled / measured and @Raghav too PLEASE do this with metric tools (feelers) not in inches.
the inch measuring is not as precise as metric and all values in the manuals are in metric, so ..... ;)

good luck with your ladys :)

Hello everyone
I finally have some time to reply back to you all

I was able to do most of it what you guys suggested

got the following work done

Fork oil changed
Fork oil seal changed
Throttle body cleaning
New spark plugs
Oil pan changed
Engine oil changed
Oil filter changed
Air filter cleaned

I am planning to get the

steering stem bearing changed
Shims
Wheel bearings
Throttle cables changed next month

I plan to keep the bike for life however a lot of people have been telling me to sell it off as they say it will start giving me issues now as I have crossed 40000 kms on it.
I somehow don’t believe that and want to keep her with regular service and maintenance.

What do you guys say till how long can the bike go before it requires a major overhaul or major parts changed like the rectifiers, starter motor, timing chain replacement, boring etc

and thanks everyone for there knowledge
Cheers
Keep riding

Air filter cleaned? I guess if it's aftermarket. I don't believe any aftermarket filter will extend the life of the engine. If it were me, I'd pop in an OEM.

I've heard of busas with over 100,000 miles and still going strong.

Ya I use a free flow air filter DNA performance racing with hardly 4000 kms on it
So got it cleaned

Whoever told you that either knows nothing of a busa engine or they don't know how to perform maintenance. If you keep up on everything the way your going you'll have many many more years to enjoy the bike. I've got almost 40k miles on mine and it still runs good as ever

That’s just perfect
I have as of now parked it due summers
Temperatures here are 45-48 degrees Celsius
But thanks a lot everyone

I plan to get a few things done next month as the spares weren’t available

planning to get
Valve clearance checked and shims done
Steering bearing replaced
Wheel bearings
And was thinking of getting new coils as they turned out to be a little orange-ish when I replaced the plugs

@Raghav

nice bike at its best storage place - grin
wonderfully clean and not even a small lint to be seen

but see the pic of the 4.5 year old fork oil above
that view you will have at every fork with oil older than 4-5 years

so my reco would be - do the oil replacement every 4 years even the seals are dry
you´ll  what color your oil will have (see pic below)

this oil was 4.5 years old and had less than 12 000 km - verifiable / provable because i myself did the last replacement and noticed both jobs in the maintenance-sheet of that busa !
2020-04-20_Auffangbehaelter_Gabeloel-5_Jahre_alt.jpg

and furthermore - even the bike stood for 4-5 years in a best conditioned room
the oil is aged over the years and so to see crap
fork oil ages where ever you store or fill it in
see my following pic of my oil can with the stamp on it
fill date (april ´17) + best before (april´21) date stamped

DSC_0042.jpg

to everybody ;) - replace the fork oil evey 4-5 years
disregarding / ignoring the mileage

and if you start that job
regrease also all the bearings around the swingarm and shock
every 4-5 years
what means pulling the arm etc.
yes i know a ungrateful job (plenty of 4 hours) and associated with a lot of bending of the body (and curses) - but it's worth it because who wants rust in the bearings?
would say nobody ;)
