Hey Guys, I am new to bikes so please excuse the stupidity.. This is a multi question topic: 1 my bike has a rattle sound at idle , but when i squeeze the clutch in it stops...It does have a one piece clutch hub and heavy duty springs. Is this normal??? Also I was reading one of the other topics about starter breaking the case , Should I get one of those case protectors for the starter bore? & What is the process of removing the starter and installing a case protector? I am a Good mechanic on cars ( Automatic trans builder) but know NOTHING ABOUT BIKES) Last but not least if anyone is in The Tennessee , Alabama Georgia area and will be tearing down a busa motor Please let me know ..Maybe I could come watch?

I mentioned it to the dude I bought it from and he said it was like that when he got it .He had it for about a year and said it has always been that way..

Silly question, but can you tell where the rattle is coming from? (general area I mean)

No , I havent really listens to where .. I do know it does go completely away when I squeezzzz the clutch in....But I can listen to where and get back with you .. Probably in a couple of days.. ( I am a work a haulic ) headed out now again.. It will be a day or two before I can start the bike...

There have been a lot of posts on here about the same thing. I get it on mine too. Loads of Busas do it, so I wouldn't worry about it. See this Link:

There are lots of posts like this if you do a search.

If you look at the second last post on that link, Goldenchild explains it well.
"the noise is normal, the clutch basket just spins while at idle and that allows the locker to float(bang).take off from a light get up to speed and you won't hear it when you pull clutch in cause speed of basket is high and locker stays locked up..as you slow down or come to a stop it will start to come right back cause it unlocks again..you will know a bad knock when it happens..ridem til the wheels fall off. "

The 2002 and older bikes are the only ones that could have a problem with the idler gear. But by now if your 2002 or older hasn't ground up the idler gear, I doubt there'll be a problem. Biggest prevention method is preventing starter kickback. It can happen when your battery gets weak. I installed a high output battery, 235cca, on my 2002 and have had no problems.

Here's a link for all the info you need,

So bottom line can we replace items in the clutch to get rid of the noise? Makes our bikes sound like a freight train. I have seen a few replacement parts to stop the shudder when doing a drag start.
