Might need a new motor

Hello all, me again!:cry:

Well, after scratching up enough money to finally take my 99 Busa to the most reputable shop in the area to get my PC3 tuned on Monday 2 Nov. 09. I got a phone call from them on Tuesday, I was hoping they was calling me to come and pick her up, but, this was not the case.

They were calling to tell me that while they were trying to get a good base map on her and up to about 50% throttle, they started to hear a loud knocking from the motor. :cursin:

They are guessing that I threw a rod and are now investigating.:please: They say that if I threw a rod, they would basically have to rebuild the motor...$1625 just for Labor/ no parts!

So, it looks like, my $200 job is gonna turn out to be about a $2000 job! I am waiting on the diagnosis today, so, if any of you know of someone getting rid of a good motor, please let me know!

She was up to 72k and some change, I guess it was time for her to do something. I guess I will rebuild and go bigger either 1397 or 1441 might be too much for the street though.

Dyno tuning really works a motor. Its too bad cause you prolly woulda been fine street riding her :-( Some shops advise against dyno tuning older or higher mileage bikes for just that reason.

THE BIKE SHOULD HAVE BEEN CHECKED OVER BEFORE THE DYNO,I HAVE A GUY WHO'S BIKE HAS BEEN SERVICED BY ME SINCE NEW WITH 125K ON IT RIGHT NOW AND WE DYNO IT AT EACH SERVICE TO SEE IF IT'S DOWN ON POWER/TORQUE..YOUR BIKE TALKS TO YOU ALL THE TIME YOU JUST HAVE TO BE LISTENING :rofl: AND UNDERSTAND WHAT IT'S SAYING... :laugh:
 
Sorry to hear! depends on what parts you damaged....check ebay for a crank and rods if they are damaged or last resort PM me...I have a good set of stock rods and crank that I MIGHT think on selling...you can usually find for a good price on ebay though..trust me, its not going to be $2000 its gonna be more if theyre charging you that for labor...maybe Greg can help you out...1397 is perfect for the street if you are experienced enough, mine has been abused constantly and has been reliable..also depends on the builder...usually ..and Greg can attest to this, they would check the bike before throwing it on the dyno, atleast a quick listen and walk around.....
 
I would NOT DINK AROUND with a rebuild by someone who I don't know. If you don't know of their skills in really rebuilding a motor, checking clearances etc, then you would be wasting money. I know LOTS of motors get built everyday without lots of clearance checking and making sure everything is in spec., they usually do ok. BUT for the money your spending, have a pro do it (like GPW) who does it all the time. They know what to look for and good inexpensive tweaks. For big money, you want it built like a Nascar motor with everything verified so ou don't get it together and blow your new motor. I have seen young guys waste thousands and thousands of dollars on ATV racing builds, snowmobile racing and car builds, and the builder didn't even know what to check......

I would just ship the entire bike (not just the motor) to GPW so he can go overthe entire bike because of its mileage. Check transmission, wheel bearings, etc.

Unless you signed some sort of waiver, I think it would be the shops responsibility for the damage to your bike. It worked fine before you took it there...correct? There are many members here that have exceeded your miles and haven't had any problems with their bikes. The whole 50% story is the dealer trying to soften the real story which says that they screwed up. Just like GC said, any good tuner would have been able to tell if there was a problem prior to failure. I think they owe you a comparable motor that works.
