Military Pay

This is an Airman's response to Cindy Williams' editorial piece in the Washington Times about MILITARY PAY, it should be printed in all newspapers across America .

Ms. Cindy Williams wrote a piece for the Washington Times, denouncing the pay raise(s) coming service members' way this year citing that she stated 13% wage increase was more than they deserve.

A young airman from Hill AFB responds to her article below. He ought to get a bonus for this.

"Ms Williams: I just had the pleasure of reading your column, "Our GIs earn enough" and I am a bit confused. Frankly, I'm wondering where this vaunted overpayment is going, because as far as I can tell, it disappears every month between DFAS (The Defense Finance and Accounting Service) and my bank account. Checking my latest earnings statement I see that I make $1,117.80 before taxes per month After taxes, I take home $874.20. When I run that through the calculator, I come up with an annual salary of $13,413.60 before taxes, and $10,490.40, after.

I work in the Air Force Network Control Center where I am part of the team responsible for a 5,000 host computer network. I am involved with infrastructure segments, specifically with Cisco Systems equipment. A quick check under jobs for Network Technicians in the Washington , D.C. area reveals a position in my career field, requiring three years experience with my job. Amazingly, this job does NOT pay $13,413.60 a year. No, this job is being offered at $70,000 to $80,000 per annum.......... I'm sure you can draw the obvious conclusions.

Given the tenor of your column, I would assume that you NEVER had the pleasure of serving your country in her armed forces. Before you take it upon yourself to once more castigate congressional and DOD leadership for attempting to get the families in the military's lowest pay brackets off of WIC and food stamps, I suggest that you join a group of deploying soldiers headed for AFGHANISTAN ; I leave the choice of service branch up to you. Whatever choice you make, though, opt for the SIX month rotation: it will guarantee you the longest possible time away from your family and friends, thus giving you full "deployment experience."

As your group prepares to board the plane, make sure to note the spouses and children who are saying good-bye to their loved ones. Also take care to note that several families are still unsure of how they'll be able to make ends meet while the primary breadwinner is gone - obviously they've been squandering the "vast" piles of cash the government has been giving them.

Try to deploy over a major holiday; Christmas and Thanksgiving are perennial favorites. And when you're actually over there, sitting in a foxhole, shivering against the cold desert night; and the flight sergeant tells you that there aren't enough people on shift to relieve you for chow, remember this: trade whatever MRE (meal-ready- to-eat) you manage to get for the tuna noodle casserole or cheese tortellini, and add Tabasco to everything.. This gives some flavor.

Talk to your loved ones as often as you are permitted; it won't nearly be long enough or often enough, but take what you can get and be thankful for it. You may have picked up on the fact that I disagree with most of the points you present in your opened piece.

But, tomorrow from KABUL , I will defend to the death your right to say it.

You see, I am an American fighting man, a guarantor of your First Amendment rights and every other right you cherish. On a daily basis, my brother and sister soldiers worldwide ensure that you and people like you can thumb your collective nose at us, all on a salary that is nothing short of pitiful and under conditions that would make most people cringe. We hemorrhage our best and brightest into the private sector because we can't offer the stability and pay of civilian companies.

And you, Ms. Williams, have the gall to say that we make more than we deserve? You can kiss my royal red a**!!!

This article was originally published in 2000, which casts it in a different light. I still disagree with what was said, but her comments are far more reasonable given that there wasn't a war going on. The woman that wrote it is not in the CBO currently, she held that post from 1994-97. She works at Mass. Institute of Technology. Also the airman that responded did so from Utah, not Afghanistan.

what's this 13percent she's speaking of? last I read they denied the 3.5 and resubmitted 2.3

smalled I've seen was 1.9 largest I've seen was 3.5

do u guys realize how much money 13percent is the US??
i'll tell u.. for me estimate: 670 or so a month... that would cover my car AND bike AND insurance payments and still have money left to ride to lunch and back.

In Israel I believe everyone is required to spend time in the Military defending the country, some stay one but every one gets to experience whats it's like. This comes from a documentary I saw I am not there an not sure if it is true.

This is true, and I think it is an excellent idea. Non-combatant options should be available for genuine conscientious objectors, but national service of some sort should be a requirement.

I'll worry when the air force stops complaining about something.

If I remember correctly, there was a re-tooling of the pay scale at certain paygrades and there was up to a 16% payraise proposed for Senior Enlisted and Limited Duty Officers, if my memory serves. Every year there is a comparision done on the differences between military pay and allowances and the civilian market... in some areas we are close - in others we are quite a way off. I disagree to a point with both sides - as they both sort of disregard certain aspects of military pay - but I agree with Steph - a helicopter only stops leaking because it is out of fluid...

Spent 10 years in the Air Force serving my country. To those that speak ill of my service, I guess you have that right. Sorry can't sit idle on this one. Dino, your beliefs in this world makes me feel secure in my opinion when I totally disagree with you.

I could not join any service although I tried. I personnally make leaps and bouns more money now than if I could've joined at 18 a little less than 7 years ago. I do not think its right my buddy had to go to work in private sector in sandbox to triple his pay vs. Re-enlist to feed his family at a still not that impressive rate. Soldier on home front in the form of leos and on the national front as gi's are the most abused and taken for granted individuals, I personally would like to apologize for the lack of understanding in our nation for the service you all provide.

There is no I in TEAM! Armed Forces = ALL branches, Army, AF, Marines, Navy, Coast Guard, all Reserves & Guard. They all have a right to complain when low life politicians have the gall to vote themselves 15% pay raises and then hand out a meager <3% pay raise for the fighting armed forces and have the balls to call them OVERPAID! I was active duty when this article originally came out and there was NEVER a 13% pay raise given to the military.....maybe talks of it, but the E1-E6 and O1-O4 ranks never saw that kind of salary increase in a single year. Over a 4 year cumulative period MAYBE....but the day the military gets a pay raise equivalent to any member of congress.....well.....hell will have officially moved north of Siberia! It's the same everywhere from local to state to the federal level. Politicians whine and complain in every way to deflect the attention away from their own shortcomings.

She's bitter cause she's only making 140K give or take... Low pay has aways part of service particually for the enlisted but stating "it's more than they deserve" talk about insult to injury. What's risking your families well being not to mention your life worth anyway?

A1C Bragg must be making a butt-load of money now with the training he got from the service because he is no longer in the military. The money isn't bad but none of us expected to get rich going down the path we chose. They should make some up-armored busa's though, it'd be a little easier to outrun those damn rockets:moderator: Who am I kidding, I just miss the old girl.

If they gave out 13 percent I would start doing backflips. I can't remember what they resubmitted but I know it's the lowest raise that can leagally be given.

Well done A1C Bragg
for those of you who have never walked the walk you wouldn't understand.

Jeez - rock, we ought to try and get you a raise so that you could do a mod or two... man - you think as long as you've had that thing you could've put a little work into her... I mean, really. it's embarassing. Just a chrome nut or something... I promise you won't be able to stop....

now that you mention it  I have been looking at some singled sided swing arms. A raise/bonus would help a brotha nicely lol
but like Bragg said. I don't get paid enough to support my habbit

What a hateful op ed piece she wrote. This is the problem between those that have served and those that think they can manage those that do (while having only and education).

The airman's piece calls her out on the carpet in fine fashion. He never once complained at his duties, he never berated his Nation, he only stated what was expected and did not ask for less...only what is fair.

what do you disagree with? You saving the AF doesn't complain?
